By Jackson JEFF Hunting Introduce a Child to wildlife matters 22 How can you point the way for a child to enjoy hunting in woods, fields, and marshes that will last a lifetime? If you have wonderful memories of hunting and if you have children, grandchildren, or others in your life you wish could have experiences like yours, then this article is for you. Today most folks with rural roots no longer live in the country. We live in towns or the suburbs. If we are lucky we own wild land elsewhere or we have access to public land for hunting. Children who grow up away from natural environments can become interested in hunting. Basically, hunting means looking for food in a natural environment: looking for wild berries, digging clams, catching crayfish and fish. Hunting for animals implies a broad set of skills and tools that vary with location and circumstance. Hunting occurs wherever hungry people encounter animals. In some cities, urban people seek the pigeons nesting on a window ledge. In Greenland, Inuit seek seals on sea ice. In an old field at the edge of town, a teenage archer waits for deer. Not everyone is a hunter or needs to be. Even in primitive cultures, not everyone was a hunter. Some were devoted to agriculture, homemaking, or Jeff Jackson is a wildlife management consultant, based at his Tree Farm in Arnoldsville, Georgia.
