SustainabilityReport2009-2010.pdf. are going, especially in this economy? a major Paper Purchaser Discusses Certification: IMPACT GLEYSTEEN: I’ll give you the very brief historical perspective and then try to bring it up to date and make it a little more relevant. Originally, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, like many companies that have a direct impact on the environment, either in the products they produce or in their supply chains, we began to become more aware of those issues and we started out trying to educate ourselves. We graduated to a period where we started to set specific targets for ourselves and our suppliers to improve performance. Today, I would say we’re at a bit of a crossroads where we, along with our suppliers, are significantly more sophisticated in terms of our understanding. We’re all still focused on improvement, but now I think we’re starting to become more refined in terms of what we impact. A decade ago or so, we talked about everything from greenhouse gas emissions to whether or not elemental chlorine was used in production and where the pulp was produced and how much energy was associated with that. Now, we’re starting to focus on where we can have our most direct impact, and that brings us directly to the intersection of forestry certification and sustainable forestry management. So that’s where we came from and where we are. We’re a publishing company. We don’t have much of an environmental impact in terms of our employees or our process. Where we have the biggest impact is in our paper procurement, and then TFM: Time has championed sustainability for many years.
