from the executive director id you know that IAFP operates with only 10 fulltime staff members? With these people, we conduct the business of IAFP on an ongoing basis. This includes producing two, monthly journals (Journal of Food Protection and Food Protection Trends), the IAFP Report (our electronic, monthly newsletter), planning and preparing for the IAFP Annual Meeting and the European Symposium along with any other project that might come along. These might include standalone workshops, Rapid Response or Timely Topic Symposia. This year, we also have added the 100-Year Anniversary Celebration to our list of “extras.” We are very fortunate to have long-term staff here at IAFP. Our average employment period is in excess of 12 years. We have four staff who have worked here longer than 15 years, three who have been with IAFP for 10 to 14 years, one who has been here longer than 7 years and two who are just completing their first year. In addition, we have one part-time employee like no other could be! Julie Cattanach, who many IAFP Members know, has worked for IAFP for more than 25 years! Julie takes care of our Membership records and renewals along with any of our meeting registrations. She is our office historian too! Next up in order is Pam Wanninger. Although Pam works only part-time, it is important to recognize her since she does all of our proofreading. Pam has worked for IAFP for more than 18 years. Karla Jordan is our receptionist and processes all orders for articles and booklets along with taking care “COMMENTARY” D By DAVID W. THARP, CAE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “Over the years, I have been fortunate to work with so many leaders in food safety” of the Audiovisual Library. She also prepares invoices and takes care of our incoming mail (both snail and E-mail). Karla has been with IAFP for just about 18 years. Our Food Protection Trends and other major materials are prepared by Donna Bahun who joined IAFP in 1994, more than 16 years ago. Donna prepares all of our Annual Meeting materials and works with our printer for any of the printed items we need. Lisa Hovey, our assistant director, began as our director of finance just over 14 years ago. Shortly thereafter, we reorganized and she became the assistant director. Lisa takes care of many of our business operations such as insurance, employee benefits, payroll and the like in addition to many of our meeting planning issues for Annual Meeting and the European Symposium. A little over 11 years ago, Didi Loynachan joined the IAFP staff. She has covered a number of differing duties over that time, but has settled into two main roles. The first, as editorial assistant to oversee the JFP manuscript processing system and working with the scientific editors. The second role is in assisting and overseeing anything and everything committee (or PDG) related. Donna Gronstal, our senior accountant, began with IAFP a little over 10 years ago. Donna is responsible for tracking our various means of support, paying our bills, balancing everything out (to the penny!) and preparing our financial statements. Of course she works closely with the audit team annually during our audit. Next in order is Farrah Benge, our accounting assistant. Farrah has been with IAFP for almost 8 years now and inputs payments and transactions received by IAFP. Farrah also assists with keeping tabs on our exhibitor payments and communicates with our exhibitors on items of importance. She also assists Julie by helping with Membership mailings (invoices, new Member and renewal packets). Susan Smith just passed her first anniversary at IAFP and has been working closely with our Affiliate organizations in addition to preparing the IAFP Report,our monthly electronic 146 FOOD PROTECTION TRENDS | MARCH 2011
