The session on food law provided perspectives from South Africa, Europe, and Canada and reminded me of the importance of evidence-based laws and regulations. Additionally, I gained a good global perspective from talks about food safety challenges and improvements in South Africa and China. I also attended lectures on raw milk and raw milk cheeses; raw milk has become a troublesome trend in Colorado and nationwide. Lastly, the session on food safety behavior and risk communication gave me many good ideas to take back to Jefferson County to incorporate into our outreach program. Other highlights included Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack addressing the conference attendees and providing good information about the current administration’s focus on food safety and the budgetary challenges and creative solutions currently being explored and implemented. Dr. Jorgen Schlundt was the chosen speaker for the John Silliker Lecture. In addition to being a very engaging speaker, Dr. Schlundt provided a very compelling example of a successful farm-to-fork risk assessment program implemented in Denmark to control Salmonella in laying flocks. Additionally, this year included IAFP’s 100th Anniversary Celebration – Taste of Wisconsin. The celebration was held at the beautiful Milwaukee Art Museum on Lake Michigan. The evening consisted of a variety of fermented foods, dancing, and even a polka lesson – we were in Wisconsin, after all. Attending the IAFP Annual Meeting was a great way to meet new people, gain new perspectives, and generate new ideas for food safety programs. Additionally, hearing success stories provides motivation to return to work and implement new ideas and share information with your agency. After returning to Jefferson County, I’ve been working to develop new food safety communication tools and to encourage the development of a risk assessment/data team to better incorporate the concepts of risk assessment and analysis into our decision-making processes and programmatic planning. I would like to thank Bill Marler and IAFP for this wonderful opportunity. Jefferson County Public Health Golden, Colorado arlier this year, I applied for a travel award to the IAFP Annual Meeting. I was interested in attending because the conference offers a balance of industry and regulatory perspectives, as well as the latest in food science and technologies and a unique global perspective on food protection. You can imagine my excitement when I was informed that I was among those who had won the Travel Award. I work for a local public health department with a limited budget for continuing education, so obviously this award meant a lot to me and to my department. There are several highlights from the conference that I would like to share. Upon arriving in Milwaukee, I decided to walk through the Exhibit Hall. First, I was impressed by the exhibitors. The number of booths and the wide variety of technologies, services, and ideas exhibited was impressive and informative. The bioMérieux exhibit was especially impressive, with a full bar and appetizers. The Ivan Parkin Lecture featured Dr. Roger Cook, who discussed a convincing example of a successful risk analysis program, specifically the reduction of Campylobacter in broiler chickens through changes in slaughter practices in New Zealand.
