Our Experiences By the iaFP 2011 Student travel Scholarship award Recipients Ashley Bramlett University of Georgia Athens, Georgia Jessica Lee Corron Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado was completely surprised and honored to be a recipient of the 201 International 1 Association of Food Protection’s Student Travel Scholarship. I am extremely grateful to the IAFP Foundation for their generosity in providing these scholarships and their continued work to raise money to provide students the opportunity to attend the meeting. The IAFP Annual Meeting is unlike any other professional meeting that I have ever taken part in, and IAFP Members are open and quick to offer their guidance and expertise, all in a relaxed atmosphere. My trip to Milwaukee afforded me many opportunities to network with individuals in various realms of food safety. The Student PDG members were welcoming and provided both an enlightening and humorous talk during the student luncheon. During my time at the meeting, I was able to expand my interests in food protection while attending a number of sessions focused on everything from the perils of raw milk to the monitoring of long-term health outcomes for foodborne illness. I was also given the opportunity to present my own research, “Safe Eats: An Evaluation of the Use of Social Media for Food Safety Education,” in the technical session on education. Overall, I believe the conference has further sparked my interest in a career in food protection, and I now hope to go back to graduate school to pursue my Ph.D in Food Science. I am truly grateful for the hospitable treatment and guidance that I was afforded during my trip to Milwaukee by all IAFP Members, especially the IAFP staff, Dr. Benjamin Chapman, Dr. Mark Harrison, and Dr. Judy Harrison. My experience at the IAFP Annual Meeting was unforgettable, and I would encourage other students to attend. I hope for continued involvement in the Association and many future trips to Annual Meetings. I ttending IAFP 201 as a 1 recipient of the Student Travel Scholarship was a tremendous honor! I want to extend a huge thank you to the IAFP Foundation and everyone who was involved in bringing me to the Annual Meeting in Milwaukee. Receiving the Student Travel Scholarship was an excellent experience, and will be a highlight of my academic career for years to come. This was my third time attending the IAFP Annual Meeting, and, as always, this year’s meeting was exciting and intellectually stimulating. Each year, I look forward to attending for a number of reasons. First and foremost, there is no other meeting out there that covers the topics that IAFP covers. The Annual Meeting covers many diverse areas in food safety and presents an excellent opportunity to learn about current research in my field, as well as fields that I am less familiar with. Second, I find that the IAFP Annual Meeting is structured quite differently than other scientific meetings, with lots of opportunities to meet and interact with scientists outside of the presentations. While presentations are a great way to convey information to a wide audience, events like the PDG meetings and the receptions allow for the exchange of information and ideas, which is what makes this meeting so unique. While attending the meeting is always a wonderful opportunity, being a recipient of the travel scholarship is much more than attending the meeting itself. It provides so many more opportunities to interact with people with whom I wouldn’t normally get the chance to meet. In particular, being paired with a mentor for the meeting really helps you interact with new people that aren’t necessarily in your given field of research. I very much look forward to next year’s meeting in Providence, Rhode Island. I made many new connections this year and I look forward to reconnecting with everyone in 2012!
