from the executive director ow that December is here, the end of the year is upon us! This year has been a fast one, a productive one, and a prosperous one also. So much was accomplished by IAFP this year; it is hard to remember it all. Our Membership exceeded 3,700 individual Members for the first time in recent history. Readership for the Food Protection Trends online increased dramatically with the monthly announcement to Members and our conference and workshop offerings were outstanding in 2012. Financially, we expect to report soon about revenues exceeding expenses for the fiscal year ending August 31, 2012. Before going too far on reviewing our 2012 accomplishments, I want to share with you one important change taking place in 2013.The Food Protection Trends journal will now be published and distributed bi-monthly or six times per year. It will be newly redesigned with a fresh new approach to bringing you information you can use in your food safety efforts.There will be more articles and features in one issue than were present in two issues previously. Some items have been shortened or condensed and new features have been inserted. We think you will find the new Food Protection Trends easier to read, now containing more impactful information and it will be THE journal that you just can’t wait to get your hands on the next issue! We look forward to launching the bi-monthly Food Protection Trends and hope you will enjoy the new look and design. For a sneak preview, see the ad box on the next page. We hope you enjoy the new design and continue to be a regular reader of Food Protection Trends. The redesign of Food Protection Trends evolved out of the Executive Board’s strategic plan that Katie “COMMENTARY” N By DAVID W. THARP, CAE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “We look forward to launching the bi-monthly Food Protection Trends and hope you will enjoy the new look and design” Swanson references in her recent President’s columns. This plan was refined at the March 2012 Board meeting and is another accomplishment of this year. Additionally, as Katie points out this month, we have made good progress against the strategic plan through the MOU with FAO, efforts to attract food toxicologists to IAFP and our international outreach. Recent examples of our international involvement include working together with the Foundation Peru to conduct a two-day, food safety event in Lima, Peru with more than 400 food safety professionals in attendance. This meeting was held in late October with many supportive comments upon completion of the meeting. There was an excellent showing of IAFP Members who came to share their expertise with the audience members. Just two weeks following the Lima meeting, IAFP was around the world at the meeting in China. This year’s meeting was held in Shanghai with more than 1,000 Shanghai with more than 700 attendees. Again, IAFP Members stepped forward to carry the most of the program presentations. This is the sixth year for the ChinaChina the sixth year for the Food SafetySafety Quality Conference + Food and and Quality Conference Expo. IAFP has been a supporter of + Expo. IAFP has been a supporter this conference from the beginning of this conference from the beginning and it continues to grow in stature continues stature and influence. From both China and Peru, there are strong indications that Affiliate organizations will soon be formed. This is another indication of our international outreach as we continue to increase the number of affiliated organizations from worldwide locations. Earlier in the year, we gathered food safety professionals in other parts of the world. So as to not overlook two additional international meetings taking place in 2012, we also participated in the Dubai International Food Safety Conference in February and we held the European Symposium on Food Safety last May in Warsaw, Poland. Both of these events are well established and improve IAFP’s recognition as a world leader in food safety. During 2012, we continued to serve our mission by dissemination of information through our two journals, the Journal of Food Protection and Food Protection Trends. Both journals have 734 FOOD PROTECTION TRENDS | DECEMBER 2012
