The word "law" may sound intimidating, dry, or even
boring to someone exploring professional development
groups; however, the Food Law PDG is not like that - it
is welcoming, vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunities
for professional development, networking, meaningful
dialog and action! Law, in a close tie with economics,
is at the heart of almost any issue we face in our communities, society, nation, or in the global food system. Law is
also one of the most effective tools for creating a healthy,
safe, and ethical society.
The Food Law Professional Development Group tackles
tough issues associated with how food rules, regulations,
and policies impact industry, consumers, government
and how they affect or are integrated with other aspects
of public health like nutrition and chronic disease
prevention. Food Law members also are involved with
protection of the food supply from unintentional and
intentional threats and address fraud, unfair trade practices
and risk.
Our international, multi-sectorial, diverse membership
is dedicated to providing an international forum for the
exchange of information on the scientific issues associated
with food laws, regulations and policy. We represent a
wide range of fields and professions in the areas of law,
risk management, large and small scale food businesses,
fisheries, dairy, packaging, ingredients producers,
sanitation, chemicals, veterinary medicine, food banks,

animal welfare, farming, marketing, communications,
consulting, rural development, climate and environment,
food defense, biosecurity, information management,
education and training, trade, airlines, flavors, software,
steel, non-governmental food protection and federal, state,
and local regulatory agencies across the globe.
Food Law has history of contributions to the field of
food protection and IAFP. Recently, we've worked with
other PDGs and partners on webinars and symposia
on Salmonella, incentives for food safety performance,
integration of food safety and food security, measuring
regulatory effectiveness, safe irrigation during shortages,
global burden of foodborne disease, and FSMA. We are
busy working to share information and create dialog
on topics such as food safety negligence, agricultural
law, the definition of healthy food, food system sustainability, regulatory success in developing nations, new
and emerging national food safety system similar to
FSMA, lessons learned nationally and internationally
implementing FSMA a year later, intersections between
nutrition, food protection, and sustainability, global
produce safety, making resources available and accessible,
trade agreements and food protection and collaborating
with international affiliates.
