Hello, Food Science!
A native of the Carolinas, Chip Manuel's young career in food science has led him
through numerous states, but his most recent move put this southerner deep into
Midwest territory and will give him a front row seat at IAFP 2020, the Association's
Annual Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio.
"You belong in food science," exclaimed a college career advisor after reviewing the results of Chip's
occupational assessment test. That
was a shock to Chip, who had his
eyes on a career as a mechanical
engineer when he enrolled in
Clemson University. "I was always
a tinkerer," he exclaimed. "It's a
trait I got from my dad and so I
thought a degree in mechanical
engineering would open up a lot of
doors into the automotive industry. It was a blessing for me that
it didn't work out," admits Chip,
who was a bit overwhelmed by his
engineering courses. Following
the advisor's recommendation,

Chip sat in on one food science
class and immediately switched. "I
quickly realized this was an area of
study that was not only applicable
to the everyday life of people but
also offered so many different
directions in which I could go."
A Career That Started at an
IAFP Annual Meeting
The direction Chip took after
earning his Bachelor of Science
from Clemson, Master of Science
from Colorado State University
and PhD from North Carolina
State University was industry.
"I owe that opportunity to
IAFP's 2014 Annual Meeting
in Indianapolis," explains Chip.
While attending that Annual
Meeting, Chip was able to land an
interview for his first job. "It was
literally a matter of being in the
right place at the right time. Our
research group had a booth beside
my future employer. At one of the
receptions we got to chatting and I
found out they were looking for a
food microbiologist. I interviewed
and the rest is history!" Chip's
first job involved research and
development in food microbiology
as well as technical support for
a variety of industries, including
grocery stores and supermarkets.
Making the Move to Ohio
These days, Chip can be found
working as Food Safety Science
Advisor for Akron, Ohio-based
GOJO Industries, makers of Purell.
