I, too, have a great sense of pride in
being IAFP's first non-North American
International President. International
brings something very special to IAFP.
It brings diversity in cultures, diversity in science, diversity in
industry, and diversity in regulatory approaches and systems,
and that means that there are many ways to skin the proverbial
food safety cat.
International means we can be exposed to and share all that
diversity, learn so much, and select innovative;
innovative, perhaps innovative,
solutions to our food safety problems. What a fantastic resource to
have at our fingertips.
Let's go back a few years. It was in 1997 in Orlando at my first

But I sat there quietly - just a newbie from Down Under, keep
quiet, Cook - don't embarrass yourself or New Zealand.
However, I watched Don Schaffner, Carl Custer and Caroline
frequently jump to their feet in symposia and question what was

being said. I plucked up courage over the next year and at the first
opportunity in 1998 headed to the microphone with a question in
mind. No - session over. Total deflation. Another year!
It wasn't until New Orleans in 2003 that the three Yanks, two
Aussies, (Deon Mahoney and Ian Jensen) and two Kiwis ( John
Bassett and myself) found ourselves in a Zydeco Bar and got into
a deep philosophical conversation about making sure that every
alternative was explored by questioning everything.
On that night, the IAFP Brat Pack was formed to stir the pot
at every possible opportunity.
So where, you ask, does Jennifer come into this? Twelve years
later, a few of the Brat Pack members found ourselves at the
Student Mixer - hey, we were all students once. Jennifer, with
a group of students, cornered me and asked how I had the courage
to pose the questions I do in front of such an auspicious scary
audience. No way they could do it.
I answered that just like them, I get huge butterflies before
heading to the microphone, get a dry mouth, am shaking, and the
first sentence comes out sounding like a foreign language. But you
just do it because there is never a right or wrong, and someone
in the audience will have their eyes opened by your question or
statement and learn something that will change their view and open
up a whole new world. That is what IAFP is all about!
Jennifer and the students have since then gained the courage
to ask questions, and have organized symposia and roundtables to
explore alternative views. It is great to see the new generation ignite
the torch, to which I raise my hat. We should all claim it as a legacy.
But a word of warning - the current Brat Pack ain't done
stirring yet.

virtual meeting. Maybe, we would find that the second and third
IAFP 2020, A Virtual Annual Meeting will

be passed. The actual meeting dates have
passed, but attendees will be able to view
the presentations for 6 months longer
so if you missed something during the
meeting, you still have time to take a look!
The year 2020 is proving to be a very
long year for lots of reasons. First and
foremost, it is due to the many changes
caused by the COVID-19 virus. The virus has turned our normal
world upside down and not only causing pain and suffering (and far
too many deaths) to those affected by COVID-19, but economic
turmoil too. We can only hope for a quick recovery once vaccines
become widely available for the general public.
This leads me to planning for the Virtual Annual Meeting.
Personally, I would rather plan 10 of our "normal" Annual Meetings
before having to plan another virtual meeting! It is probably

virtual meetings would be easier? I hope so!
We truly appreciate the exhibitors and sponsors who have
stood by us during the changes from our in-person Annual Meeting
and agreed to continue their support of this new, Virtual Annual
Meeting format. In addition, our Members, speakers and session
organizers have all been fantastic to continue working to make the
Annual Meeting a great success. We are thankful for everyone's
support during the various transitions we have made.
I also want to thank the IAFP staff members who have worked
feverishly to convert the "Leading Food Safety Meeting" to a virtual
meeting. It has not come without many hours of extra effort on
everyone's part. Thank you all for your input and efforts!
We hope you enjoyed IAFP 2020, A Virtual Annual Meeting.
And for now, we hope we will be able to physically "see" you at
IAFP 2021 next July in Phoenix. Until then, stay safe and healthy.
