BEYOND the BIO

"I had worked within the industry doing
research and development," Manpreet
said. "While I enjoyed the dynamics and
the pace of the industry, my interest lied in
academics, partly because of the influence
of some great mentors along my graduate
school journey."
Coming out of grad school, Manpreet
had some job offers within the industry
but took a calculated risk and turned them
down to wait for a faculty position.
"It's not very smart when I think about
it now," he jokes. "But I had to give it a fair
shot and my first job was this position as
an assistant professor of food safety and
microbiology at Auburn University. It all
worked out."
While Auburn did not have a food
science department at the time, they did
have a poultry science department which is
where Manpreet began his career working
in food safety and microbiology.
"I feel that is the reason for the
association of being a poultry scientist,"
he says. "But I'm not a poultry scientist by
training and had to learn on the job about
the poultry industry and apply my food
microbiology training."
With poultry being the top agriculture
commodity in states such as Alabama and
Georgia, Manpreet quickly found a niche
for someone with food microbiology
training working in academia.
"There aren't many of us," he admits.
"But there is a need for food safety research
in poultry and with my background,
coming from Kansas and Iowa and working
with meat, I was comfortable in this area
and continued to learn the ropes of the
poultry industry."
Seven years into his first job, opportunity
knocked. A position with the food science
department at Purdue University would
allow him to have more interactions within
the industry while continuing to be an educator and researcher, something he craved.
For the next few years Manpreet would
expand his career, build his knowledge...
and a family. He and his wife, Kamal, have

two young daughters. And it was family that
drove him back to the southern U.S. and
back to poultry science.
"A faculty member in the animal science
department at Purdue who was aware of my
research in the area of poultry processing
and food safety took a job at Georgia and
as part of his role he had a mandate to
fill a position in food safety in the area of
poultry processing," recalls Manpreet. "He
encouraged me to apply for the position
in Georgia and fortunately it worked out
for me and I was offered the position. I
accepted the position as this was the stage
of my life where being close to family was a
priority and of course I knew my wife would
appreciate moving to Georgia where my
in-laws live just two hours away."
Now, Manpreet serves as a professor
and extension food safety specialist for the
University of Georgia, where he finds a
satisfying blend of industry work, education
and research. And most recently, he was
named interim department head of Food
Science and Technology.

In his spare time, he enjoys traveling to
new places and admits one of his family's
goals for 2020 was to travel and introduce
his daughters to new cultures. However, like
most families during this unprecedented
time, Manpreet says they have found it
difficult to travel much farther than their
basement this year.
"It's important to us that the girls
appreciate various aspects of different
cultures," Manpreet said. "And we try to
visit family in India once a year which gives
them a good idea of our culture, but at the
same time there are other parts of the world
rich in culture with lots to offer and for
them to have an appreciation for that would
be really enriching for them and satisfying
for us as parents."
The challenges of 2020 that keep
his family grounded have also allowed
Manpreet to enjoy more experiences at
home with his girls as they reach milestones
for a first time, such as biking, swimming,
sports and other activities.
"I want to be every part of all of that,"
Manpreet admits. "And it means I'm
learning ballet," he jokes.

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE FOOD AND WHY?

A: A homecooked meal made by my mom of classic north Indian cuisine.
Q: WHAT FOOD DO YOU AVOID AND WHY?

A: With my profession, there's a lot. But in terms of preference, I'm not a big
organs guy. I won't do chicken hearts or livers. I've tried them but they are
not my taste and they pose a food safety risk if not cooked properly.
Q: FAVORITE FOOD SAFETY TIP?

A: Two things: one, always wash your hands with soap and water.
And number two, trust the thermometer!
Q: FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL?

A: I haven't traveled everywhere to know exactly where my favorite is
but my bucket list trip is Iceland.
Q: FAVORITE COLOR?

A: It's become pink but not by choice with two daughters.
Q: ANY ADVICE FOR NEW OR POTENTIAL IAFP MEMBERS?
