By the Recipients of the IAFP 2020 Student Travel Scholarship Award

I was extremely honored to receive the 2020 Student Travel Scholarship Award. Though this year wasn't what participants were expecting for the IAFP 2020 Annual Meeting, the Association did a wonderful job in connecting its members
and providing a platform to present research and hold food safety discussions in order to move food safety forward.
At this year's conference, I was able to present some of my research in one of the technical sessions. It was a great
experience to be able to share this with the food industry and the food safety scientific community. Following the session,
I received emails from others asking questions regarding the research, and it was a great opportunity to connect with
people who took interest in it. Along with sharing my own research, it was an amazing experience to see what others were
doing to further research, tackle current food safety issues, and implement and/or address food safety policy through the
symposia, roundtables, and technical sessions. I look forward to watching and having access over the upcoming weeks to
some of the sessions I missed.
Outside of the technical aspect of the conference, I was grateful for the many opportunities provided by the organization and its PDGs to connect and network with individuals within the organization. It was great to connect with the Student
PDG during the virtual coffee hours they held and attend the evening networking events provided by the organization.
Though I was disappointed, like many, to not have been able to attend the conference in person, participating at home

had its benefits as well. I was able to watch some of the sessions with my young son, which gives the expression " raising

I would like to thank IAFP and the Foundation for providing me this wonderful opportunity to attend this year's
virtual conference. I appreciate the flexibility the organization showed to adapt to the pandemic and provide quality
content to its members. I would like to thank the Selection Committee and the IAFP Staff for all the hard work and effort put into organizing this meeting.
I am extremely grateful for receiving the Student Travel Scholarship and look forward to attending IAFP 2021 in Phoenix, Arizona.

It has been an incredible honor and privilege to receive the 2020 Student Travel Scholarship Award. IAFP's Annual
Meeting is one of my favorite conferences, and while it looked a little different this year, I still enjoyed this opportunity
to network and learn from leaders in industry, government, and the scientific community.
One unique aspect of this year's virtual conference I really enjoyed was that we were able to take part in more
concurrent sessions than we would have in person. This allowed me to attend multiple symposia that covered an array
of topics, including alternative protein sources and their food safety implications; novel technologies for improved shelf
life of food products; food safety risks of cooked meats; and how to communicate science to a non-technical audience.
Additionally, I personally feel I gained more from presentations in this format because I could watch at my own pace
to ensure I had a complete understanding of the topic. As a graduate student interested in pursuing an industry career,
this allowed me to gain a broad, yet in-depth understanding of what is currently important within the meat and food
industries.
There are many aspects of the IAFP Annual Meeting that I look forward to every year, especially the high energy
and welcoming environment. While meeting and networking in person was not feasible in 2020, I do appreciate the
efforts of the Planning Committee to ensure there were still virtual networking opportunities available to attendees. I was
very impressed with how well organized the event was, especially on such short notice. In the spirit of IAFP, I also took
the chance to personally reach out to my current network of food safety professionals in various industries to gain insight
into what it is they do within their respective industry and learn from their individual experiences.
Finally, I would like to thank the IAFP Foundation and Student Travel Award Selection Committee for this opportunity.
I look forward to (hopefully) attending and meeting the other recipients at IAFP 2021 in Phoenix, Arizona.
