Old Business: Committee reviewed minutes from 2019 JFP Management Committee meeting. A motion was approved to accept the minutes
as written; no edits were needed.
Scientific Co-Editors Report: Panos Skandamis provided the journal
Scientific Editors' Report. Highlights include that Volume 82 (2019) of
the Journal of Food Protection, contained 2,215 pages and 252 articles,
which included 232 research papers and notes, and 20 mini-review,
review and general interest papers; there were 3 fewer articles than in
Volume 81, but 23 more pages. The average length of time between
receipt of manuscripts and their online publication increased in 2019
compared with 2018. The average time from submission to publication
was 7 months, a one-month increase from last year. Now with posting of
articles online ahead of print, the time between submission and online
publication is expected to be significantly shorter. The Journal of Food
Protection continues to have an excellent worldwide reputation and appeal. Researchers from countries other than the United States authored
157 (62%) of the articles in Volume 82, a 2% increase from the 60% for
Volume 81. Forty-one countries were represented by corresponding
authors in Volume 82, of those from the U.S., corresponding authors
represented institutions in 27 states and the District of Columbia. The
Editorial Board of the Journal ended 2019 with 168 members, including
59 international members. Members serve 3-year terms and many accept
additional 3-year appointments. Anyone interested in reviewing manuscripts on an ad-hoc basis or serving on the Editorial Board should make
this interest known in a letter to one of the Editors, being sure to list their
areas of expertise. The Scientific Editors also wish to thank all of those
individuals who volunteered as ad-hoc reviewers for 2019.
The Scientific Editors acknowledged the many contributions that
Dr. Lloyd Bullerman made to JFP and to our profession. Dr. Bullerman, a
world-renowned food mycologist and Professor Emeritus of Food Science
at University of Nebraska, passed away on November 25, 2019. He
served as the sole JFP Scientific Editor from 1988 to 1995 and contributed over 30 research papers to the journal, concerning the conditions
affecting the growth of fungi and mycotoxin production in food.
For the year to date (2020), seven issues of Volume 83 of the Journal
have been published. There is a trend towards increased manuscript
submissions, accepted, and pages published.
The John N. Sofos Most-cited Publication Award for a Research
Paper is given to Yang Liu et al., 78:111-120 (first place); Katherine
M. Kosa et al.,78:180-186 (second place); and Alessandra Riva et al.,
78:1142-1146 (third place). John N. Sofos Most-cited Publication Award
for a Review Paper is given to Miao Guo et al.78:457-476 (first place).
The Most-downloaded Publication Award is given to a Review Paper by
Jeanne-Marie Membre et al., 76:538-551.
There was a question as to the number of minority and/or female
authors represented in the journal publications. It was noted that this information is not collected. Other metrics such as age, gender, nationality
(for all authors, not just corresponding), etc. are also not collected. It was
suggested that IAFP's new Diversity Council may be able to assist the
Committee in broadening the scope of authorship in the Journal.
Administrative Editor's Report: The switch to the PeerTrack manuscript
submission system occurred on September 24, 2019. The new journal
platform, Meridian, was launched February 2, 2020. The use of PeerTrack

in conjunction with Meridian is expected to dramatically decrease the time
from acceptance to publication as the publication date will be the date
of online publication. Manuscripts can be published (online) about 3.5
months earlier due to the PeerTrack system.
There is a downward trend in the number of IAFP Members opting
for print copies of the Journal. Overall, there are fewer subscription than
in previous years. Subscriptions are renewed in the fall of the year; the
impact of the current economic downturn on IAFP membership and subscription rates is uncertain.
New cover art for the Journal has been quite well received.
New Business: Matthew Moore, University of Massachusetts - Amherst,
was elected as Vice Chair for the Committee.
Recommendations to the Executive Board:
1. The Committee requests help of the new Diversity Council to
increase diversity and representation of underrepresented groups
within JFP authorship.
2. The Committee asks the Board to reappoint Panos Skandamis to
another term as Scientific Editor.
3. The Committee asks the Board to affirm the selection of Matthew
Moore as Vice Chair of the Committee.
4. The Committee wishes to solicit support from the PDGs in encouraging members to submit ideas for review articles to be published
in JFP.
