MINUTES OF THE INTERNATIONAL
ASSOCIATION FOR FOOD PROTECTION
2021 ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING
JULY 20, 2021
President Roger Cook welcomed attendees to the
Annual Business Meeting.
Moment of Silence
President Cook asked those present to observe a
moment of silence in memory of departed colleagues.
Call to Order
The Annual Business Meeting of the International
Association for Food Protection was called to order at
12:35 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. A quorum was
present as defined by the IAFP Constitution.
With the approval of the Executive Board, President
Cook appointed Don Schaffner as Parliamentarian for
the Business Meeting.
Minutes
Minutes from the 2020 Annual Business Meeting,
which were published in the January/February 2021
issue of Food Protection Trends, were distributed
via email on June 28, 2021, and were included in the
Business Meeting Packet. Changes were requested prior
to the Pre-recorded Business Meeting. Having received
no changes, the minutes were accepted as printed.
President's Report
President Cook reported despite the challenges
of COVID-19 effecting meetings throughout the world,
the finances of IAFP remain healthy and on an upward
trajectory.
The IAFP Foundation remains healthy and continues
to look for innovative ways to return benefits to IAFP
Members and he challenged the Foundation to grow
reserves for the future.
President Cook noted the formation of a Council on
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He thanked the Members
for serving on this Council.
President Cook concluded his report by presenting the
Presidential Recognition Awards. Awards were presented
to Deon Mahony; Ian Jensen; DeAnn Benesh: and Pam
Wilger for their personal support and friendship over
many years.
Affiliate Council Report
Affiliate Council Chair Julie Jean reported that the
Affiliate Council met virtually on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
There were 42 Delegates and representatives in attendance.
After IAFP reports by Ruth Petran, David Tharp,
and Susan Smith, one of the items discussed was the
options of and opinions about the various platforms to

use during virtual Affiliate meetings. Presentation of five
Affiliate awards took place during the meeting, and Amy
Rhodes, Delegate from the New York State Association
for Food Protection was elected unanimously as incoming
Affiliate Council Secretary. No recommendations were
made for the Board. The gavel was passed to Wendy
White to begin her term as Affiliate Council Chair before
adjournment.
Executive Director's Report
David Tharp reported that the past year has again
been challenging, but that everyone faced similar
challenges in their own working environments. IAFP
faced the challenges by holding a record number of
webinars, organizing the 2020 virtual Annual Meeting
and European Symposium along with assisting with
virtual meetings in China, Dubai, Chile (Latin America
Symposium) and Hong Kong (Asia Pacific Symposium).
Each of these efforts helped continue IAFP's mission
to provide food safety professionals worldwide with a
forum to exchange information on protecting the food
supply.
David also mentioned the start up of the Diversity,
Equity and Inclusion Council and that their charter and
mission statement are now completed. He reminded
everyone that IAFP Connect is used exclusively for
Committee and PDG communications and reported
that IAFP Membership rebounded nicely after the dip
experienced in 2nd and 3rd quarter of 2020.
For his financial report, David stated that the General
operating fund for IAFP holds reserves of $2.87 million
as of August 31, 2020. This balance includes a loss of
$567,000 for FYE August 31, 2020. This substantiates
the need to have reserves to carry the Association
through the more difficult times. David cautioned that
the outcome for FYE August 31, 2021 may still show a
loss due to the extreme expenses to make IAFP 2021
a fully hybrid meeting.
In concluding his report, David thanked the 11 IAFP
staff members and took a minute to recognize Didi
Loynachan for her 22 years of service to IAFP and to
the Journal of Food Protection. Finally, he thanked the
IAFP Board and Members for their support and direction
over the years.
Tellers Committee Report
Martin Martinez reported on the Secretary election.
Ballots were due to the IAFP office by March 2, 2021
for the election year 2021-2022 Secretary. There were
766 valid votes cast with Mark Carter from MC elected
Food Protection Trends - November/December 2021
