85% of attendees downloaded IAFP's
free app, allowing for quick and convenient
searches for presentations, speakers,
and room locations. IAFP's Daily
Update, an electronic Annual Meeting
news brief updated onsite, was also
emailed to attendees and all Members
each morning, providing a recap of the
previous day's activities and photos, and
listing the current day's agenda.
Four Pre-Meeting Workshops held

Saturday evening's Welcome Recprior
to IAFP 2022 provided participants
with a head start on their food safety
knowledge by adding at least one
additional day to their Annual Meeting
experience. Next Generation Sequencing:
A Tutorial and Hands-on Workshop
to Help Understand This Emerging
Technology was held Friday afternoon,
July 29 and all day on Saturday, July 30.
This well-attended workshop shed light
on questions related to this topic to allow
attendees to have a more holistic view
of the applications of NGS by gaining
knowledge of the tools that can be implemented
to data analysis in the lab. The
first of Saturday's one-day workshops,
Microbiological Sampling and Testing:
ICMSF Workshop for Risk Managers and
Food Business Operators, introduced
the principles and practices of microbiological
sampling and testing for food
safety and quality assessment in the
context of the verification of process control
and food lot acceptance. The second
one-day workshop, Mold Contamination
in Foods and Food Production Facilities
- Monitoring, Sampling, Testing, and
Identification Techniques, was a repeat
workshop that introduced the basics of
fungal ecology and indoor contamination;
shared air quality monitoring and
investigation protocols; demonstrated
proper sampling techniques; and elucidated
fungal spoilage investigation
methods including culture-based
investigation. The third one-day workshop,
Use and Interpretation of the
USDA-ARS-Predictive Microbiology
Information Portal, Pathogen Modeling
Program (PMP) and ComBase,
described and demonstrated how the
USDA-ARS-PMP and ComBase can
be used to predict accurate estimates
on growth, survival, and lethal effects of
processing environments on foodborne
eption provided those who attended
the Pre-Meeting Workshops and others
arriving throughout the day a chance to
relax with a cold beverage and appetizers
while making new friends or reconnecting
with those not seen since their
last in-person Annual Meeting. It was
a great way to leap into Sunday's full
day of Committee Meetings, the Affiliate
Council Meeting, and PDG meetings,
which returned this year as onsite-only
events. Minutes from these meetings
can be viewed, beginning on page 521.

As in past years, student membership
and involvement grows more and
more with university attendees enthusiastically
promoting the benefits of attending
IAFP's Annual Meeting. Designating
time and activities at each meeting for
students in food safety allows them to
gain knowledge from seasoned professionals
who can guide them and to learn
from their peers. Sunday's Student PDG
standing-room-only meeting allowed time
for brainstorming, interaction, and networking,
all of which serves the interests
and needs of our Members. Shortly after,
222 students and professionals came together
at Sunday's Student Luncheon,
where guest presenter Wendy White
spoke about " Discovering the Secrets of
IAFP " through membership, meetings,
mentoring, affiliates, awards, and more.
Students also had an additional dedicated
event at Tuesday evening's Student
Mixer, where mingling, music, and
snacks were a refreshing break after
two full days of non-stop sessions.
IAFP once again had a videography
team onsite to capture the flavor and
beauty of Pittsburgh that will help promote
the meeting and the Association,
along with candid interviews with food
safety professionals from all parts of the
world; exhibitors promoting the benefits
of attending; and Student Members who
spoke about their experiences and the
educational opportunities available. These
videos, along with the Opening Session,
the U.S. Regulatory Update, and the
Awards Banquet are posted on the IAFP
Annual Meeting website page, with other
videos scheduled for future promotions.
