Dental Alumna Pays It Forward
DEVIN LYNN CU OFFICE OF ADVANCEMENT

"When I was in school, boys could pursue any
occupation they choose. But girls' choices were limited
to being a secretary, teacher or nurse," said Marilyn Rowe,
DDS. "My mother was a nurse, so I planned to follow in
her footsteps."
Inspired by her husband, Lee Rowe, DDS, who graduated from the University of Colorado
School of Dentistry in 1977, Marilyn decided to change careers and made a bold leap
from nursing to dentistry. Among the founding women accepted into dental school at
the University of Colorado, Marilyn began her dental education in 1978. At that time,
scholarships did not yet exist, however the school had a program that encouraged students
to practice in underserved areas in exchange for a break in tuition. Thanks to that program
and a loan from her parents, Marilyn was able to attend dental school and graduate in 1982 as president of her class.
The financial boost Marilyn received made her education possible and
spurred a desire to "pay it forward" to future generations of dental students.
Inspired by the recent milestone anniversary of her husband's graduating
class and the gratitude she still feels for her parents' financial generosity,
Marilyn created an endowed scholarship to honor those who supported her.
"I came from humble beginnings and it is so meaningful that I can help others that
want to do well in their careers," said Marilyn.
Endowed scholarships, like the Drs. S. Lee and Marilyn S. Rowe Endowed
Scholarship, provide valuable financial resources to students in perpetuity. These
gifts can be realized in several ways including a charitable IRA roll over. The
impact not only helps foster student success, but also creates a lasting legacy of
generosity, just as it will for the Rowe family.
