Top Moisturizers for Your Dry, Red, Itchy
Skin Without a Prescription
ust in time for winter when dry, cracked skin and eczema
flare up most often, a new article by the University of
Colorado College of Nursing helps consumers and providers
by listing the most effective therapeutic moisturizers, their
cost, and medication adherence levels. The article, published in
The Journal for Nurse Practitioners, is expected to be used by
nurses and doctors to better treat people with atopic dermatitis
(AD), a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease that requires
frequent moisturization to manage. According to lead author
Noreen Heer Nicol, PhD, RN, an associate professor at CU Nursing,
" In most countries, one in every five children has AD, while as
many as 8% of adults suffer from dry, inflamed and cracked skin. "
Researchers found the therapeutic products with the most data
to support their use are also the cheapest to buy; Cetaphil and
Eucerin. Other basic moisturizers, including those provided
by popular brands such as Aquaphor (Beiersdorf Inc.), Eucerin
(Beiersdorf Inc.), Vanicream (Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc.),
CeraVe (L'Oreal Group), or Cetaphil (Galderma Laboratories),
may be sufficient to help the dry skin of AD. Regardless of the
moisturizer used, when applied two-to-three times a day in adequate
quantities, they can reduce the need for more aggressive
therapy and the time between flare ups. In addition to the list
of moisturizers, the researchers emphasize the need for regular
bathing to reduce bacterial infections and to rehydrate the skin,
as well as the importance of patient education, engagement and
healthcare provider advice and guidance.

Nitrous Oxide Decreases Pain for Women in
Labor at Any Altitude
notable study compared nitrous oxide use for pain relief
during labor at institutions located at sea level versus high
altitude. To date, no other publication has evaluated the
impact of altitude when administering nitrous oxide for pain relief
during labor. The study published in Anesthesia & Analgesia,
with obstetric anesthesiologist Cristina Wood as lead author
and Principal Investigator and CU Nursing Associate Professor
Priscilla Nodine, CNM, PhD, found the gas is safe to use for pain
and relaxation for women in labor whether they live in Florida
or Colorado. The multicenter retrospective study included four
