arlin Callaway, DNP, RN,
ACNP-BC, ACNS-BC, AOCNP®
is the Lead Advanced Practice
Provider for Medical Oncology at the
University of Colorado Cancer Center.
She graduated from CU College of
Nursing with a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing in 1997 and a Doctor of
Nursing Practice degree in 2016. She
was inspired by her grandmother to
become a nurse. While she was in
school, Callaway worked at Children's
Hospital in the inpatient bone marrow
transplant unit. To pay for her degree,
she used a Navy ROTC scholarship.
That led to her serving the US Navy in
oncology for more than 20 years.
While she lived out of state for a
while, Callaway is now back home in
Colorado. She works on the Anschutz
Medical Campus serving survivorship
patients as their treatment transitions
to surveillance.
Callaway hopes to engage fellow
alumni and students in her new
position on the CU Nursing Alumni
Association Board of Directors. " This
is my opportunity to give back to the
next generation of nurses. CU College
of Nursing is one of the universities
that educated and invested in me, so
I want to pay it forward. "

iriam Cavender, BSN, RN, NCSN is the School Nurse Coordinator for
Denver Public Schools. She earned her Bachelor of Science at CU College
of Nursing in 2017. Between now and then, she cared for brain health
patients, children and even animals.
" There are many crossovers between animals and pediatrics. They can't always
speak for themselves, but they are always their truest self, " Cavender says.
While she loved serving animals, Cavender decided to focus her career on children
and pediatrics. That eventually led her to work as a nurse technician at Denver
Public Schools, where she found her calling in community health. In 2019, she
became a school nurse and cared for students in three schools. Then last year, she
was promoted to school nurse coordinator.
" Now that I am in a leadership position, I want to retire at DPS. I love the kids and
my team members. We serve underserved populations, which is so important to
me, " said Cavendar.
Cavender is proud to be a College of Nursing graduate and a member of the Alumni
Association board, along with some of the very faculty members who taught her.
" I hold a degree from an incredible nursing college. It was rigorous, and we were
pushed to our limits in a way that truly prepared us for the work of being a nurse. "
