Second career helps Brady soar
For 29 years, Mike Brady worked for the airline industry. The first seven years with Frontier, and the last 22 with United. He was a lead ramp representative, working aircraft in and out of Denver International Airport.
Becoming increasingly disenchanted with the industry post 911, Mike began contemplating life after United. And when his eldest daughter graduated from college he started to seriously think about going back to school himself – something he started at 18, but never finished. “With a family to support life just got in the way, so college was put on hold,” says Mike. With hopes of becoming a high school math and science teacher, Mike began taking classes part time at the Community College of Aurora. “It was a great program for someone working full time,” says Mike. And in 2004, he switched to pre pharmacy. On his birthday, April 6, 2006, he received his acceptance letter from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy and enrolled as one of the oldest students in the class of 2010. “No pressure,” Mike says. “I had no idea how challenging it would be. I took everything day by day, semester by semester.” “I’m glad I went back to school when I did. I had a whole lifetime of experience that gave me perspective. And truth be told, I wasn’t disciplined enough the first time around.” Now facing graduation and a second career, Mike is enthusiastically embracing his future. His goal is to work for Kaiser Permanente full time after graduation. Having interned with the company for 2 ½ years, he fell in love with its business model. “I love the company. I love its philosophy – working as a team with other health care professionals to help patients. It’s the closest to a residency as possible, without doing one.”
