C e n t e n n nA L s C H O L A R s I eW Centennial Scholars The five students selected as Centennial Scholars come from all walks of life, but there is one thread that binds them together – they are all outstanding students, scholars and philanthropists excelling in their studies and providing hundreds of hours of service to those less fortunate. The following reveals why these students were selected as the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Centennial Scholars. John Carpenter Centennial Scholar Molly Derry PhD candidate Masunaga-Roberts Centennial Scholar Kelsey Melander Second-year pharmacy student NACDS Foundation Centennial Scholar Norman Fenn Third-year pharmacy student Future plans: Clinical Medical Researcher “I hope to continue the legacy of our school through interdisciplinary collaboration in the clinical setting and be a force in the field of integrative medicine.” Spurred by the medical struggles of her sibling, Molly believes she was shaped from a young age to become a medical researcher. Throughout her life, scientific innovation transformed her family. This knowledge helped trigger her interest in toxicology, which in turn led her to focus on chemoprevention utilizing natural products. Via local seminar and national presentations she has communicated her knowledge of the field and expanded her own. Through campus and community involvement in alternative medicine she is creating awareness – from seminar and symposium coordination, to teaching nutritional classes to children. During her career, Molly has been involved in a variety of laboratory settings and in the future she hopes to make the leap to the clinical setting. Dr. Robert Sclafani illustrated, “Molly’s focus is on novel translational research emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration to generate effective chemoprevention strategies for colon cancer. The University recognizes the need for collaborative relationships among graduate students, experienced faculty, and research groups. These collaborations allow innovation within the field and result in advance knowledge of that particular area of research. Molly is an extraordinary example of the next generation of young researchers and I have confidence that she will continue to excel.” Future plans: Clinical Pharmacist “The honor of being named a Centennial Scholar will only strengthen my loyalty and motivate me to continue the work that I have already begun.” Beyond her scholarly focus, Kelsey is also a committed citizen – one with a strong service ethic who’s interested in making good things happen in the world that desperately needs good things. She has spent time working with refugee populations in Thailand through the Global Refuge organization, and she’s eager to do more. Kelsey’s time in Brazil during her senior year of her undergraduate degree affirmed her commitment to lead others in service, often by the stark contrast between what she saw there and the system in which she’s currently a part. In his letter recommending Kelsey for the scholarship, Thomas G. Bowie, Jr., PhD, said, “In so many ways, whether working in a local food bank, or volunteering as an ESL teacher for adult learners, or taking a cold wintery Saturday away from her impossibly busy schedule to help an elderly woman restore basic organization to her home, Kelsey has always been out in front leading others in service. And her recent year in Africa doing AIDS work, once again serving the poor and marginalized, suggests that she will continue to find points of intersection between these important spheres in her life. In short, what a powerful legacy she will leave as one of your scholars! As a scholar, as a humanitarian dedicated to serving others, and as a leader who is consistently impressive, Kelsey Melander would be an ideal Centennial Scholar because she’s a sure bet to leave a powerful legacy that endures.” Future Plans: Board-certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialist “I feel that educating students is one of the best ways to inspire change and advance the profession.” Through his active involvement as a student leader, Norm has already made a lasting impression on the school. From assisting with PharmD candidate interviews to leading campus tours to co-developing an elective course titled Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, and serving on numerous organizations and two national pharmacy boards, Norm works diligently on behalf of the school and the pharmacy profession. According to Val Kalnins, executive director Colorado Pharmacists Society, “His zeal for helping younger students is unparalleled. His community service is exemplary, helping with projects such as Operation Christmas Child, which sends presents to children in Africa and entertaining children in hospitals. His active participation in professional events such as health fairs, drug disposal days and ‘brown bag’ medication reviews further demonstrate a strong commitment to the community and the profession. His leadership in pharmacy organizations, his devotion to younger students and his commitment to the community will result in a legacy that will enhance the CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for many years to come.” 4 CU Ska g g s School of Phar m acy and Phar m ace ut i cal S c i e n c e s
