MULTI-TALENTED
PHARMACY STUDENT
LEAVES LASTING
IMPRESSION
BY VANESSA HUGHES

he challenges I have overcome
have granted me an interesting
perspective on life," Erin Terrio
penned several years ago. "I
love making the best of every
situation, so I tend to approach
life with a less serious attitude."
Erin, who was diagnosed with
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) as a baby, wrote
those words for a high school English
paper and lived those words during her
25 years of life. Erin was a second-year
student at the CU Skaggs School of
Pharmacy and desired to be a pharmacist in rural Northeastern Colorado so
she could live close to her boyfriend,
Stephen Moen. The couple planned
to get married when Erin completed
her degree at CU.
Erin started pharmacy school
in the fall of 2015 and earned a 3.5
GPA her first year. She thoroughly
enjoyed learning and interacting with
her classmates and professors, and was
knowledgeable about several of the
medications being taught, because
she had taken some of them over the
years for her CF.
Even though the disease was part of
her, Erin was adamant about not letting it define who she was. She chose
to keep that part of her life private and
never felt sorry for herself. Moreover,

Erin lived life to the fullest, didn't take
things for granted and always looked
on the bright side.
Amazingly, Erin hadn't been
hospitalized for her condition until
she was 23. In June of 2015, she was
admitted for an intestinal problem
and received an appendectomy,
which started a gradual downward
cycle. Her lungs and immune system
became compromised, however, 13
months passed with no hospital visits.
The week prior to winter break, Erin
wasn't feeling well, but was determined to finish her finals.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, the day
before the family was to leave for
Christmas vacation in Cabo San
Lucas, MX, Erin's health took a turn
for the worse. She was admitted to
the hospital and had mental status
changes due to CF liver disease which
was aggravated by pneumonia.
Erin died on Dec. 22, 2016 at age 25.
It was an incredibly tough and
unexpected loss for Erin's close-knit

CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

family and friends, but at the same
time, there are positive things that
have come from her passing. Erin
touched each person she met in a
very special way and left a lasting impression on every one of them. Love,
compassion, sensitivity, intelligence,
humor and an indelible spirit were just
a handful of wonderful characteristics
Erin possessed.
Erin's mother, Heidi, a retired
Army doctor, said two of the words
that best describe her daughter were
"fun" and "adventurous." She noted
that Erin was the first to jump off a
high cliff, ride her mountain bike
down a steep hill or take on a challenge

Being a dad to Erin
was like grabbing
onto a powerful
force of life and
being pulled along
for the ride.
