DEAR sPLAsh, In a span of nine days in January, the Aurora, Colorado-based swim team of Nathan Mueller, Spencer Painton, Austin Phillips, Jack Strobel and Garrett Suter set four state relay records, winning the 400-yard medley relay (3:42.00) and 400 free relay (3:20.26) at the Patriot Aquatic Club Invitational in Lincolnshire, Ill.; and the 200 medley relay (1:42.19) and 200 free relay (1:31.52) at the Aces Swim Club Winter Open at Englewood High School. The team is ranked No. 1 in the country in the 200 free relay among 13- to 14-year-old boys. Sherri Phillips Aurora, Colo. DEAR sPLAsh, I took this picture of my son’s relay team shortly after a swim meet. A couple boys were down on themselves and needed cheering up. I had them gather all their ribbons and medals and reflect on all they had accomplished as team members. It had an immediate impact on their morale and boosted their commitment to each other. this is my space. right here. i own it. and it’s not just me who owns this here spot. everyone else who has answered the call of epic coolness that is the Justin case secret brigade owns it, too. Like our newest members li and bryant, who have their heads hidden somewhere in this issue, along with my buddy Moose. they are all officially 57.2% more awesome than they were before they joined the Brigade. if you’re looking to up your coolness factor, send me a photo of your head for the next issue, so that when you’re old and kids ask you “Gee, Grandpa/Grandma/Crazy relative, how did you get to be so super duper awesome?”, you can say “i got in the Brigade. the Justin Case secret Brigade.”
DEAR sPLAsh, I recently received an email from USA Swimming that contained a link to USA Swimming’s Member Welcome Kit where you can create your own custom video. It was a huge hit at our house. Our 8-yearold, who has been swimming competitively with the Germantown Swim Team in Germantown, Tenn., recently hit a rough patch in his very young swimming career. When I showed him the video and he read Ryan Lochte’s statement, he went nuts, jumping up and down saying, “USA Swimming wants me! USA Swimming wants me!” Then he looked at me and said, “How does Ryan Lochte know about me?” I explained the USA Swimming’s Web site contains information on all the meets he has attended and his times. He was amazed and motivated to hit the pool and begin practice with his coach. I have attached a picture I took of Nicholas during a December meet on the backstroke leg of the 100 IM. I also found a picture of Ryan Lochte in basically the same positioning in the stroke. Scary resemblance, don’t you think? He was given a swim cap signed by Ryan Lochte by his coach. I created a shadow box with these pictures and the cap. The caption reads, “Olympian and future Olympian.” Diana Harviel Germantown, Tenn Ms. Harviel, Thanks for the feedback on the Member Welcome Kit. Other swimmers who would like to check it out should go to www.usaswimming.org/welcomevideo.
