2008 Olympic Trials Pool A by Emily Sampl FINdS A HOME The 2012 Trials warm-up pool, an Lshaped, 50-meter by 25-yard pool, also has yet to be purchased. It carries a price tag of $1.15 million. This special Trials pricing is a deep discount compared to standard pricing, according to Erin Whitlock, Director of Business Development at Myrtha. Myrtha will offer a discount on its component parts of the pool through Trials to those interested in purchasing the pool. The new facility sits on 44-acres of land, with nine surrounding soccer fields and ample parking space. Along with the two pools, there will be a workout room with training equipment specially geared for aquatic athletes. A large community room will also be used during swim meets to house swimmers, concessions and potentially a swim shop. Sallade said the team has already planned five long course meets there this summer, including the Eastern Zone Championships. “It’ll be a great opportunity to bring swimmers from all over to Richmond,” he said. “Words can’t even describe what having this facility will do for our club.” fter months of anticipation, Poseidon Swimming in Richmond, Va. will finally have a new pool to train in on March 13, 2012. Thanks to wide support from the community and a solid fundraising effort from Poseidon and a local soccer club, Poseidon and the Greater Richmond Aquatic Partnership teamed up to purchase the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials competition pool, along with another six-lane, 25-yard pool from Myrtha Pools. Both pools will open in a brand new, multimillion dollar aquatics facility in March. Nine world records, 19 American records and 20 U.S. Open records were set in the pool during the eight day meet, making it one of the fastest pools in the country, if not the world. “We started talking about building our own pool, and then in the lead-up to 2008, we learned that the Trials pool would be up for sale,” said Ted Sallade, head coach at Poseidon. “It was a collective effort. We knew we were going to get kicked out of our facility and we wanted to build our own pool, but this turned out to be exactly what we wanted. It’s a $14 million building, which is much grander than anything we could’ve done on our own.” Following the conclusion of the 2008 Trials, the eight-lane, 50-meter competition pool was deconstructed and stored in Omaha for three years. Then, in July of last year, the pool was transported to Richmond where construction on the new facility began right away. Last May, Poseidon parted ways with their regular training facility, and with the new pool still nearly a year from completion, they quickly had to find a new place to practice. “Our 12-and-unders have been practicing at a three-lane pool, and the 13-and-overs swim at an outdoor pool in Richmond that has a tent over it,” Sallade said. “We really had to scramble and figure out what we were going to do. We lost a lot of our culture splitting the team up, but at least we’ve had a place to land, a home.” Fortunately, the weather in Richmond has been mild this winter, allowing half of the team to practice outside. “Sometimes the kids come up to me and say it’s really cold, but I just have to tell them, ‘Well, it’s 82 degrees in the pool!’” Sallade said. Originally, the team also bought the 2008 Trials warm-up pool, but has since purchased a different 25-yard pool from Myrtha that is a better fit for its intended use at the facility. C 2012 OLyMPIC TRIALS POOL HEAdEd TO NEW ENGLANd harles River Aquatics, a USA Swimming team based in the Boston area, has purchased the 2012 Olympic Trials competition pool, also from Myrtha Pools. The pool will be taken apart, transported and then rebuilt in Boston following Trials and the United States Masters Swimming national meet, which will be held at the same pool in Omaha immediately after Trials. Those interested in purchasing Myrtha pools should contact Erin Whitlock at ewhitlock@myrthapoolsusa.com, or at 941-955-2591. 26 sPLAsH • March/April 2012
