f you attended the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, you most likely remember the fanfare, the numerous world records and the millions of gallons of water sitting in a pool specifically (and quickly) built for the event on the floor of the arena. With Trials back in Omaha, Neb., this summer, you can expect more of the same – along with a few changes.
By Mike Watkins
Pool components have traveled over 5,000 miles from Castiglione, Italy.
Attendance was more than 160,000 for the 15 total sessions in 2008, breaking the previous Trials record in Long Beach by more than 40,000.
At then end of the 2008 Olympic Trials, 38 world records had been set in Myrtha Pools – nine in Omaha. U.S. swimmers also set 21 American and 17 U.S. Open records in the pool at 2008 Trials.
For the first time at Olympic Trials, Myrtha is introducing Track-Start, the newest starting block model to facilitate the swimmer’s takeoff and optimize competition performance. The block is composed of a special patented Omega platform that is compatible with the Omega Timing System and licensed to Myrtha Pools.
Since the 2008 Olympic Trials, the venue has undergone a name change from the Qwest Center Omaha to CenturyLink Center. CenturyLink, a telecommunications conglomerate based in Louisiana, bought Qwest Communications in 2010 and the marquee changed last fall.
The two pools will be built in 12 days by 38 people working 16- to 18-hour shifts. There will be two million gallons of water (one million each in the competition and warm-up pools) sitting on the floor of the Century Link Center for 2012 Trials. These two million gallons of water are equivalent to 13 million glasses of water. The combined weight of both pools is 7 million pounds.
