The books reviewed for this issue of Splash provide training and performance guidance for swimmers and coaches alike, ranging from age group swimmer development to Masters swimming and triathlons. Swim Speed Workouts for Swimmers and Triathletes is the pool version of in-home workout videos. Sheila Taormina, a four-time Olympian and World Champion, has created a toolkit equipped with concept, drill, tubing and workout cards. The toolkit offers an introduction for beginning swimmers to the jargon of the sport, like stroke rate and intervals. The drill and tubing cards explain and illustrate the components to each exercise. Additionally, 48 workout cards derived from Taormina’s own training provide a guide for 16 weeks of training and taper. The cards can be used by beginning to experienced swimmers, or triathletes training independently of a coach, or provide easy illustrations of drills and tubing exercises for coaches to share with their swimmers. A four-time Olympian, Sheila Taormina competed in the 1996 Olympics in swimming, the 2000 and 2004 Olympics in triathlon and the 2008 Olympics in Pentathalon (swimming, cycling, running, pistol shooting, fencing and equestrian jumping). As the title suggests, Developing Swimmers by veteran coach Michael Brooks focuses on how coaches assist swimmers in moving from age group swimming to senior and beyond. Broken into four parts, Brooks describes how to recognize the drivers for success, establish solid stroke technique, develop a mental and physical training plan and cultivate race and meet strategies. Drills and dryland exercises are accompanied with clear written instruction, as well as underwater photographs. Example training plans begin at age 8 and progress through early high school. The final section also provides insight from Brooks’s 20 years of experience on how to facilitate communication between coaches, swimmers and parents, as well as tackle challenges swimmers may face in training and meets. Although this long-term planning guide may sound like a cookbook, Brooks provides strategies for tailoring the process, as no two swimmers are alike. Written primarily for coaches, Developing Swimmers also provides insights for swimmers as to why coaches structure training regimes and race strategies as they do. Michael Brooks has coached swimmers from novice to Olympic Trials qualifiers. With over 20 years of experience, Brooks has received both state and national awards, including state Age Group Coach of the Year and Coach of the Meet at the YMCA National Championships. He currently coaches at York YMCA in York, Pennsylvania.
