UTAH’S RIVERS
UTAH’s rivers offer some of the most incredible rafting, kayaking, and boating in the country. From rivers that have carved impossible gorges, to alpine waterways that flow down scenic mountain canyons, Utah has the river experience for you. Northern Utah has Utah’s mountain waterways like the mighty Weber, Provo, and Ogden rivers. In the northeast, the Green River drops in from Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains to form Flaming Gorge, and from there it begins its long march south through famous Desolation Canyon. Eventually it meets the mighty Colorado, which flows for hundreds of miles making up some of the state’s most legendary runs with famous names like Westwater and Cataract on its way to Lake Powell. The stunning San Juan River arrives in the southeast corner of the state where it meanders through some of the most geologically-dynamic landscapes in the world. Since the days river legends like John Wesley Powell, Norman Nevills, and Burt Loper pioneered navigating our amazing rivers – Utah has been a source of whitewater wonderment.

UTAH’S LAKES
Water skiers and wake boarders, house boaters, jet skiers, and anglers, you will find ample locations to delight in UTAH. Lake Powell attracts thousands of boaters, anglers, and water recreation enthusiasts from across the country, all enjoying the tranquil waters surrounded by some of the most fantastic canyon scenery in the world. Lake Powell has more shore miles than the entire Pacific Coast of the U.S., so there is always a secluded beach to drop anchor and enjoy a family camp. The lake also provides access to Rainbow Bridge National Monument, remnants of ancient Native American civilizations, and the peaceful grandeur of countless serpentine slot canyons. Enjoy the romance of sailing the Great Salt Lake — its brilliant sunsets of orange, red and lavender. Listen for the call of seagulls, and other migratory birds. The Great Salt Lake is a unique and wonderful sail boating and kayaking destination. As one drives northeast from Logan through the Logan Canyon on Highway 89 and reaches the east slope of the Wasatch Mountains, the aptly nicknamed, “Caribbean of the Rockies” comes into view. Bear Lake’s limestone deposits suspended in its waters are the cause of its unique beauty. The lake is a popular destination for boating, water skiing, wake boarding, swimming, sailing, fishing, even scuba diving. There are many marinas surrounding the lake, two tourist towns, Garden City and Laketown, and Bear Lake State Park. Many of Utah’s state parks have scenic reservoirs that feature water-based recreation. For more information, consult the State Parks section of this guide.
