At this year's Commencement in May, it was my greatest pleasure to welcome 616 graduates
of the class of 2017-our newest alumnae/i-to membership in the Alumnae and Alumni of
Vassar College (AAVC). Members of the AAVC Board presented each graduate with a baseball
cap that included their year of graduation (Go, 2017!) and the phrase "Vassar for a Lifetime."
A few weeks later, during Reunion weekend, almost 1,400 alumnae/i from the classes of
1942 through 2012-70 years of Vassar alumnae/i-were back on campus reuniting with old
friends, making new connections, and reminding us all that, truly, Vassar is for a lifetime.
Many members of Vassar's reunion classes-years ending in 2 or 7-spoke about how
Vassar has positively affected their lives since graduation. For quite a few, Vassar proved to be
outstanding preparation for graduate school. Others acknowledged how their fellow Vassar
alumnae/i had helped them over the years with career opportunities and other ways to engage
and connect with the broader world.
During my 25-plus-year tenure at CBS News, I was once accused of hiring too many Vassar
graduates. I immediately asked, "What's the problem?" Vassar graduates are smart, articulate,
energetic, and passionate-the epitome of the "best hires."
Vassar's HIRE VASSAR campaign is intended to help current students and recent
graduates connect with career opportunities. Vassar asks all alumnae/i to "think Vassar"
when they are hiring or trying to fill internship positions. The Career Development Office
(CDO) at Vassar invites alumnae/i to post their job and internship opportunities, conduct
an information session, interview virtually or on campus, and/or host a site visit. For more
information, please contact Susan Smith, Associate Director of Employer Relations, at
hirevassar@vassar.edu.
Wishing all AAVC members a wonderful and glorious summer.
