AND THE AWARD GOES TO ...

A

wards season has arrived. That time
of year where seemingly every
organization gives out accolades
to those they feel earned special attention.
At Walmart GameCenter magazine, we like
to recognize the games that kept us up late,
obsessively striving for that next milestone,
level, trophy or achievement.
Usually, choosing our favorite games isn't
too difficult. Out of a sea of options, a few
usually bob straight to the top. Not in 2017,
however. We played so many great games
that choosing winners in each category was
harder than picking your favorite Avenger.
(Come on, you know you like Loki best, even
if he is the bad guy and really doesn't count.)
At the end of the day, we were pretty
pleased with our list, and you can see our
Games of the Year starting on page 24.
Still, since I get this space to ramble on
each month, I decided to give out a few
of my own awards for games that weren't
recognized during the official voting.
Let's start with Comeback of the Year,
going to Call of Duty: WWII. This year's
installment offers a compelling single-player
campaign, the usual quality multiplayer and
the best co-op Zombies mode yet. It was
a great decision to revisit the World War II
setting, and offer an alternative to the influx
of futuristic shooters. It's great fun.

The Inappropriate for All Ages award
goes to South Park: The Fractured But Whole.
Honestly, it's a really good game: fun to
play, challenging and completely hilarious.
It's also sure to offend just about everyone.
Seriously, the game is strictly for those over
18 who have broad sensibilities. If you fit that
mold, you should really give it a play.
The Peanut Butter in my Chocolate award
winner is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
Two disparate properties teaming up for a
turn-based strategy game. It should never
have worked, but it did. And it's brilliant.
The How'd that Happen? award goes
to the Nintendo Switch. It may be the
greatest console launch ever, and it came
from Nintendo, which is usually slow out
of the gate. The company deserves special
recognition for that.
Finally, the Not Dead Yet award is
presented to single-player games. The
experts who professed that multiplayer was
the only future for games need to look long
and hard at 2017. Oh, how wrong they were.
So, we welcome you to the first edition of
Walmart GameCenter magazine of 2018. And
thanks for letting us keep you at the center
of everything gaming.
