The next Call of Duty is a
reimagining of Modern Warfare

here was a time-before wall-running,
before free-to-play games, before
battle royale-when Call of Duty
was known as much for its inventive, daring
storytelling as it was for its world-changing
multiplayer. That's what developer Infinity
Ward wants to get back to with the recently
announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
No, it isn't Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. It's
just Modern Warfare. And there's a good reason
for that. The next Call of Duty isn't a sequel.
It isn't strictly a reboot, either. It's a complete
reimagining of what modern warfare means to
video games.
"There was really nowhere else to go after
[the events of Modern Warfare 3]," narrative
director Taylor Kurosaki told us. "There were
no relatable, human-scale stakes left in that
world. So the best thing to do was to take
that storyline, put it to bed, without throwing
everything out. That means we're left with the

two words and what they mean in 2019, and
we're left with the essence of those characters."
Practically, what this means is that this
year's Modern Warfare is leaving the past in the
past and focusing on the present. Infinity Ward
is taking advantage of advances in technology (not to mention a reworked game engine)
to make the most intense, grounded combat
experience the franchise has ever seen.

While Modern Warfare will retain some of the
series' patented large-scale battles, you'll also
experience missions like infiltrating a terrorist
safe house in the suburbs of London. Stealthily
moving through the house, you'll feel like
you're actually taking part in a covert mission,
and making one wrong move could be the
difference between life and death.
Part of what makes this new Modern Warfare so intense is the focus on realism. Using an
advanced technique called photogrammetry,
Infinity Ward has crafted one of the most
highly detailed video-game worlds you've ever
seen. Surface details look photorealistic, even
up close, and the same goes for the characters.
A completely new lighting system not only
looks great, but it also affects gameplay. Using
the shadows and an overhauled night-vision
system, with true-to-life infrared lighting
built into the engine, taking down a terrorist
cell will get your heart racing and your blood
pumping.
How the focus on storytelling and all these
technical advancements will factor into the
multiplayer is yet to be seen. But so far, Call of
Duty: Modern Warfare has the chance to be one
of the most revolutionary titles in the franchise
since, well, the original Modern Warfare when
it launches for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and
