special items, new recipes, and other goodies.
Of course, not all of your activities on the
island will earn you Nook Miles, but that's
okay-you'll have plenty to see or do just for
fun. Some of the new activities available will
even be helpful in some way, such as the ability to pole vault across rivers in lieu of finding
the nearest bridge.
While Animal Crossing: New Horizons will
have plenty to offer anyone going it solo, you'll
also be able to play together with friends to
help liven things up. Up to four players will be

able to inhabit the same island on the same
Nintendo Switch, and you'll all be able to work
(and play) together on the same TV locally. If
you prefer your screen a little less cramped,
but your world more so, up to eight players
can visit a player's island through either local
wireless play or over the Internet.
No matter if you tackle the island with a
group of real-life pals, or go it alone with only
your animal friends, Animal Crossing: New
Horizons is shaping up to be the most exciting,
yet relaxing, chapter of the series yet.

Put those
opposable
human thumbs
to work
While the Animal Crossing series has set
the standard for many other games and
franchises that have followed, never say
that Nintendo doesn't also learn from
the things other developers are doing.
One of the big new features in Animal
Crossing: New Horizons is its crafting
system. While the idea was originally
seen in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
for smartphones, crafting will be a far
deeper and more expansive experience
in its New Horizons iteration. Given that
there won't be much of anything on
your deserted island at first, you'll need
to go around collecting materials in
order to make items such as your first
set of tools.
By shaking a tree you'll get some
sticks, and combined with a few rocks
found on the ground, you'll be able to
craft a Flimsy Axe. From there, depending on the materials, you can make a
shovel, watering can, vaulting pole,
campfire, furniture, and no doubt loads
of other creations. Animal Crossing: New
Horizons' crafting system promises to
bring even more depth and customization to a series that was already heavy
on such personalization.
