Curry with a Side
of Pokémon
One of the more interesting new options coming to Pokémon Sword and
Pokémon Shield is the Pokémon Camp,
which will give Trainers a more personal-not to mention tasty-way to
bond with their favorite Pokémon.
"Pokémon Camp is a feature within
the Wild Area that allows Trainers to set
up a tent and camp with their Pokémon,"
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield director Shigeru Ohmori told us. "Through
online and local wireless functionality,
up to three other players can visit a
camp and allow their Pokémon to play
together. Players can also combine
ingredients they've collected during
their adventure to make different types
of [Japanese] curry. Depending on the
ingredients, the curry may have different
attributes."

"In Japan, curry is a traditional
camping food," added producer Junichi
Masuda, "so hopefully this will inspire
people in other regions to try making
curry while camping!"
Of course, no question about a new
feature based around one of Japan's
most beloved dishes could go without
asking Ohmori and Masuda for their
own personal favorite versions.
"Personally, my favorite real-world
curry is cheese and tonkatsu (pork cutlet)," answered Ohmori. "As for my favorite
curry, that would be one with lots of
chicken soaked in curry," added Masuda.

Towering over smaller tweaks like that is
one of the biggest changes-both figuratively
and literally-to Pokémon Sword and Pokémon
Shield's combat: Dynamax. With Dynamax,
Trainers can have Pokémon project a gigantic
version of themselves to fight in their place,
one which boosts things like their strength,
skills, and stats.
"Dynamax is a new power-up feature that's
different than those seen in other Pokémon
games," said Ohmori. "In the main story, Dynamax can only be used in specific locations
such as Gyms and Dens [in the Wild Area], but

Trainers can also use it in multiplayer battles.
What's unique about Dynamax is that any
Pokémon can use it, and it does not require a
specific item to be held. However, Dynamax
can only be used once per battle, so Trainers
will need to think strategically about when to
use it in order to keep their opponent on
their toes."

games has typically been about
