No one has
benefitted more
in Final Fantasy VII
Remake than hero
Cloud Strife himself,
who is markedly
more likable and
relatable than ever
before.

Final Fantasy VII
Remake feels both
modern and retro at
the same time, and
it's a great balance.

march 2020

we'd just gotten a point-by-point retelling. Some die-hard fans, however,
might not appreciate those changes.
One element of Final Fantasy VII
Remake that everyone will hopefully
like is the new combat system, which
gives players direct control over
characters like Cloud, Tifa, and Barret. The mixture of more fast-paced
regular attacks performed through
direct button presses and the battle

menu, which pauses the action for
more thoughtful decisions on which
ability or spell to use, results in a
hybrid-style combat system that
works wonderfully. Every now and
then, a particular set of enemies or
a certain situation may make players
feel overwhelmed, but for the most
part combat is exciting and eventful.
Really, there's only one part of
Final Fantasy VII Remake that we

walked away disappointed in: the
overreliance at times on secondary
objectives. There are now a lot more
sidequests or other less-important
tasks to take care of between important story beats, and while they don't
hurt the overall experience, we did
sometimes find ourselves wishing we
could move on to the next big reveal
already.
Still, Final Fantasy VII Remake is
an incredibly impressive reworking
of one of the world's most beloved
RPGs. It's taken a long time to finally
get to this point, but this fantasy was
definitely worth the wait.
