'TIS THE SEASON FOR
FAMILY GAMING
T

he holiday season is no stranger to
games geared toward mature audiences, but this year's adult-aimed
offerings are balanced by an abundance
of quality family-friendly games. Thanks
to the success of the Nintendo Switch,
we're seeing fantastic, all-ages exclu-

sives, like Super Mario Odyssey, as well
as multiplatform entries such as Just
Dance 2018, taking advantage of the new
system's unique capabilities.
Even if you haven't adopted Nintendo's
hardware though, there are still plenty of
great family games to play. Xbox One and

PlayStation 4 have Super Lucky's Tale and
Knack II, respectively, while new Sonic and
LEGO games are landing on both platforms.
Regardless of which console you own, or
whether you're looking for solo, competitive or co-op experiences, this season's
age-spanning slate has got you covered.

SONIC FORCES
PUBLISHER SEGA / SYSTEM XBOX ONE, PS4, SWITCH, PC

Built by the creative team that previously brought us Sonic Colors and Sonic
Generations, the Blue Blur's next outing is
borrowing fan-favorite gameplay elements
from both those popular entries. On the
surface, however, Sonic Forces looks little
like its eye-popping predecessors.
Featuring a darker tone,
both literally and
figuratively, much
of the game
takes place in
a city destroyed
by returning antagonist
Dr. Eggman. A far cry
from the Green Hill Zone,
Sonic Forces' dystopian
metropolis looks as
though it awoke on the
wrong side of a meteor
shower. Defined by

decimated structures, fiery explosions and
myriad foes, including massive, tentacled,
robot menaces, Sonic's new surroundings
almost look post-apocalyptic.
Spend a bit more time in Forces' fresh
setting, though, and its more familiar inspirations begin to reveal themselves. While
rocketing through this foe-infested landscape, for example, Sonic can jump, boost
and lunge into baddies without missing a
beat, much as he did in Generations. He
can also refuel this enemy-thwarting ability,
and other powerful skills, by collecting
wisps, those vibrant little guys making a
return from Sonic Colors.
For fans craving even more classic
callbacks, Forces also includes platforming-focused, side-scrolling stages like
those found in the hedgehog's earliest
entries. In fact, players will swap between
modern Sonic and an old-school version

of the speedster depending on the type of
level they're tackling. While it's still a mystery how the modern, destroyed city and
the more traditional 2D areas relate to one
another, Forces promises to marry both in
a cohesive story.
Furthering the mystery is the presence
of a third playable protagonist, simply
called a "hero character." Created by the
player, this customized sidekick of sorts
can take the form of a cat, bird, bear and,
of course, hedgehog. Using a variety
of cosmetic options, from sneakers to
sunglasses, fans can personalize these
anthropomorphs and assign them specific
skills, powers and abilities.
We look forward to saving a civilization
under attack, hurtling through classic
platforming stages and creating our very
own world-saving heroes. More than all
that, though, we can't wait to find out how
Forces' enigmatic narrative ties all these
promising elements together.

For fans craving
even more classic
callbacks, Forces
also includes
platformingfocused, sidescrolling stages.
