Do you find video games confusing?
Are names of the different consoles
and genres foreign lingo to you?
Today's games present a challenge.
Even if you grew up playing the NES,
maybe you haven't picked up a
controller in a while. Walking through
the game aisle can feel like entering
a foreign land filled with otherworldly
machines.
In the United States, more than 155
million people play video games, and
their average age has climbed to 35.
Additionally, 48 percent of those who
play video games are now women.
Most significantly, research also
shows that 67 percent of parents play
games with their children and 71 percent believe games play a significant
role in their children's lives.
These statistics show there's a
good chance that you'll be looking
for hardware, games or accessories
to give your loved ones during the
approaching holiday season. But with
so many consoles, accessories and
games to choose from, you might
need a little help deciding on the
perfect gift.

So we are pleased to present our
sixth annual Parents Guide to Video
Games. We hope to simplify the process of selecting the right products
for the gamer in your life. You'll find
a primer on gaming that provides a
quick lesson on the hobby and gives
you what you need to make informed
choices. You'll see on page 8 how the
ESRB, the independent ratings board
for video games, decides what games
are appropriate for which age groups.
On page 10, we explain the latest gear,
then detail which systems are now
available.
We also take a quick look at some
of our favorite new games that are
appropriate for the whole family.

organized by those ESRB ratings for
your convenience, starts on page 30.
You'll find all the information you need
before you hit your local Walmart to
choose which games to give.
