editor’s choice enable NASA to dramatically improve the specific energy of mission critical rechargeable batteries. NASA requirements are unique because of the extremely low temperatures encountered in space. batteries, BYD’s battery management system, a power conversion system and an energy storage data station that monitors and controls the system to ensure holistic and efficient utilization. The Shenzhen Baoqing Battery Energy Storage Station is in its first stage of implementation (with 3 MW maximum output for a four hour duration), but was designed to eventually have a 10 MW output for four hours (40 to 50 MWh) with more than a 25 year service life before battery replacements may be needed. The next phases will expand the station’s power output step-bystep. BYD and CSG are hoping this real-world application and their partnership will promote the rapid development and implementation of distributed, environmentally-friendly, high-tech, energy storage solutions across the world. Ultralife Corp. has introduced the GenSet Eliminator, a patent pending, storage and power system designed to reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs by 25 percent to 30 percent for defense and commercial applications. The GenSet Eliminator provides energy storage capabilities to generators and renewable energy sources, thereby promoting optimum efficiencies through the continuous charging and discharging of Ultralife’s lithium ion batteries incorporated into the system. The system is mobile, flexible and scalable from 10 to 50 kWh of battery storage and will reduce fuel consumption while enabling the primary generator or power source to be operated at 85 percent to 95 percent of its rated load capacity. The switch between the primary energy source and battery power is seamless to the user and allows for silent and clean (zero emission) operation when the batteries are in use. The lithium ion batteries allow for continuous monitoring, reduce battery weight by a factor of four to five if comparable lead acid batteries are used, and allow much higher operating temperatures of up to 140°F (60°C) without degradation. The resulting benefits of lower fuel consumption, extended life expectancy and less maintenance to the primary power source, and silent watch capability make the GenSet Eliminator well suited for military bases that generate their own electricity. An added benefit of fuel optimization may be a reduction in casualties associated with in-theater military fuel convoys that are frequent targets of enemy attack. GenSet Eliminator, Designed to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Promote Safety Boston-Power Announces $125 Million in New Financing China Southern Power Grid (CSG), the second largest utility company in the world, has completed construction of China’s largest battery energy storage station (ESS) as well as the world’s first megawatt-level, grid-connected, environmentallyfriendly, iron-phosphate (Fe) battery storage station for commercial use, integrating BYD technology. The Shenzhen Baoqing Battery Energy Storage Station is located in the Longgang District of Shenzhen City and is tied to a 110 KV substation supporting the rapidly growing Biling Industrial Park. The system’s enabling technology is the BYD Fe China’s Largest and First Environmentally-Friendly Battery Storage Station is in Service Boston-Power, Inc. has announced $125 million in new funding from a combination of private equity investment and support from China. The growth capital and Chinese government incentives will be used predominantly to scale manufacturing, research and development, and business development activities in China for the company’s energy storage technology and products. The private equity round was led by GSR Ventures, a venture capital firm with more than $1 billion under management that invests primarily in early stage and growth stage technology companies with substantial operations in China. Additionally, through its stimulus programs and local industrial policies, the Chinese government is providing a range of grants, low-interest loans and related financial and tax incentives. Existing BostonPower investors Oak Investment Partners and Foundation Asset Management (FAM) also participated in the round. As part of its plans, Boston-Power is establishing a R&D and EV battery engineering facility in China. This organization will build upon the current generation of Boston-Power’s lithium-ion battery technology to develop new energy storage products and solutions. The company also will build a manufacturing facility in China that will be capable of producing 400 megawatt hours (MWh) of lithium-ion battery cells annually by the end of 2012.
