ABB to Build World’s Largest Network of EV
Fast-Charging Stations in the Netherlands
ABB has been selected by Fastned to supply chargers to
more than 200 electric vehicle fast-charging stations in the Netherlands, bringing an EV fast charger within 50 kilometers of all
of the country’s 16.7 million inhabitants.
Each of the more than 200 Fastned stations along Dutch
highways will be equipped with several multi-standards fast
chargers, such as the 50 kilowatt (kW) Terra 52 and Terra 53
models, capable of charging electric vehicles in 15 to 30 minutes. The first ABB Terra fast chargers are due to be delivered
in September 2013. Construction of the Fastned stations, which
will have solar canopies, is expected to be completed by 2015.
To date, the Netherlands is the most populous country to roll out a
nationwide fast-charging
network. Fast-chargers
will be located a maximum of 50 kilometers
apart along all highways,
and because of ABB’s
multi-standard design, the
network will be capable
of serving EVs offered by
all major car brands from
Europe, Asia and the US.
ABB’s open standards-based cloud connectivity solution allows
Fastned to create a user-friendly payment and access service for
all drivers.
Each web-connected ABB fast charger has a wide range
of connectivity features, including remote assistance, management and servicing and smart software upgrades. ABB’s
multi-standard design supports all fast-charging standards and
protocols such as CCS and CHAdeMO. This is critical to maintain compatibility between rapidly evolving cars and chargers in
the years to come, and will allow Fastned to maintain a reliable
service and to upgrade its network as the technology evolves.
“This countrywide network of locations will lay the basis for
the commercially viable development of e-mobility,” said Bart
Lubbers, one of Fastned’s founders. “I foresee a race towards
faster charging and larger batteries throughout the car industry.”

Panacis, Inc. has launched the Energy SharePack, which provides a complete power solution for the dismounted warfighter
in a single, smart lithium ion device using universal, bi-directional power ports.
For all militaries, reducing the burden on the
dismounted warfighter
and providing sufficient
energy to power all the
warfighter’s devices are
top priorities for fighting
effectiveness, ergonomics and logistics reasons.
SharePack is Panacis’ solution to addressing all these elements.
SharePack’s multi-function capability improves “efficiency of energy
use”, which means that the individual
war fighter and the squad can carry
less spares and use less cabling.
Recharging can be performed directly
from energy sources in the immediate environment, e.g. solar blankets,
military vehicle power, DC generators
and even partially used batteries that
would normally be discarded. The
flexibility of the SharePack means that
users can manage their own power
needs and wear the device(s) where most comfortable.
SharePack comes in two form factors that fit standard issue
military pouch sizes to allow use of existing load carriage equipment. An LCD provides detailed information about the system
such as state of charge, time to empty, and mode of operation
(charging, discharging, scavenging).
Duracell Powermat and Starbucks Expand Wireless
Charging in Silicon Valley Area
Duracell Powermat has announced the availability of wireless charging in select Starbucks stores in the Silicon Valley
area. The expansion of the wireless charging evaluation follows
a successful test of the wireless charging technology in select
Starbucks stores in the Boston area.
“Duracell Powermat offers the cure for dead battery anxiety,”
said Stassi Anastassov, president of Duracell at Procter & Gamble. “Look around any Starbucks and you will see smartphones
being placed on tables. Today these phones are losing power as
they sit there, but once a table is equipped with Powermat technology, simply placing a phone on the table will recharge it.”
“We know that our customers use our cafes in a number of
ways beyond buying coffee. For some, it’s their home office,
for others it’s their place to get away and have some time to
themselves. More and more customers are using Starbucks as
their home base and they are looking to recharge in a number
