New Products * Components New Ultra Low Profile Coin Cell Holders Introduced MPD has invented CR2016 low profile coin cell battery holder. While other CR2016 holder solutions often rise more than 8.5 mm above the PCB, the BLP2016SM-GTR rises 3.1 mm with an installed CR2016. This directly saves more than 5 mm in board height when compared to typical CR2016 battery holders available on the market. Built with reliability as the first well suited, gold-flashed, nickel-plated phosphor bronze contacts that resist corrosion. The contacts offer low electrical resistance and resistance to intermittent connections, while the recurved positive contact provide extra retention on the coin cell battery. The lightweight LCP base piece of the holder is strong, and can withstand temperatures like 260°C for modern, lead-free reflow soldering. LCP replicates metal by offering a tensile strength and modulus close to aluminum. Additionally, the LCP has chemical resistance and can withstand repeated sterilizations by standard methods used in medical device assembly, including gamma and electron beam, ethylene oxide, and hot steam or hot air processes. Surface Mount Coin Cell Contacts for Battery Enclosures Keystone Electronics has introduced its latest line of surface mount enclosure coin cell contacts. These new contacts provide a cost effective, dependable connection for coin cell batteries in self contained battery compartments. These contacts require minimal board space and allow easy access for installation and removal of a coin cell battery within a battery enclosure. Ultra low profile and compact design make it well suited for small hand held controls, key fobs, personal medical devices, digital timers and many industrial and consumer applications. The entries are manufactured from gold plated phosphor bronze, offering low contact resistance and assuring easy reflow soldering for a reliable solder joint. The spring tension of the contacts will adjust to all variations in battery heights for dependable connectivity. Contacts can accommodate coin cell batteries with diameters from 16 mm and larger. The Positive contact (Part # 110) and the Negative contact (Part #112) are available in bulk or on tape and reel for use with most vacuum and mechanical pick-and-place assembly systems. The company's full line of battery hardware also consists of SMT and THM products including contacts, clips, holders, retainers and straps in assorted materials for coin cells and batteries. KEMET Expands Product Portfolio with Large Cell Supercapacitors and Modules KEMET Corp. has announced the release of large cell supercapacitors and supercapacitor modules. This series of capacitor technologies is designed to meet the growing power management needs of the transportation, industrial, medical and consumer markets. Typical applications include power bridging, energy harvesting as well as an alternative for battery back-up. An electric double layer capacitor (EDLC), also known as a supercapacitor, is an electrochemical device that stores energy via purely electrostatic forces, as opposed to batteries where chemical reduction and oxidation reactions take place. Since the interaction is purely physical, this process can occur much more rapidly than in batteries due to higher power and enables supercapacitors to have a significantly longer lifetime without degradation. 22 Battery Power * Winter 2014 www.BatteryPowerOnline.com http://www.batterypoweronline.com http://www.BatteryPowerOnline.com
