Editor's ChoiCE a thermal battery system. ATB has been working with US defense contractors since 2006. This award from Lockheed Martin acknowledges ATB as a key supplier of thermal batteries to the defense industry. As the requirements for advanced technologies continue to progress, ATB will strengthen its position in the thermal battery industry. ATB combines the technical expertise and assets of Saft America, Inc. with the technology of ASB Group, to provide the US marketplace with an advanced domestic thermal battery company focusing on product and technology excellence. ATB's quality system is AS9100C certified. For more than seven years, ATB has been providing advanced thermal battery solutions for missiles, rockets and launch vehicles to the defense industry, aerospace industries and to defense laboratories. EnerSys to Acquire Quallion LLC IDT Announces Next-Generation WPC 1.1 Wireless Power Receiver for Portable Applications Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT) has announced a wireless power receiver meeting the Wireless Power Consortium's (WPC) 1.1 Qi specification and optimized for high-volume portable consumer applications. The new device expands upon IDT's wireless power family, offering portable device manufacturers a high-efficiency, cost-effective wireless power solution for universal compatibility with the next-generation of Qi charging bases. The IDTP9025 is a single-chip wireless power receiver IC certified to meet the requirements of the WPC 1.1 specification, offering improved foreign object detection (FOD) compared to earlier versions of the standard. The highly-integrated device includes an onboard synchronous full-bridge rectifier and lowresistance low-dropout (LDO) regulator, enabling customers to achieve added power transfer efficiency with minimal external component count and board space. The high-efficiency, costeffective design is well suited for use in high-volume portable devices where battery life and physical size are a primary concern, such as in smartphones, tablets and related accessories. For added control, IDTP9025 is capable of passing communication and power transfer information to a local microcontroller, as well as fault and safety monitors, through the integrated I2C port. This allows the customer to build custom control algorithms and user interfaces to enhance the user experience. In addition to an evaluation kit with WPC-certified reference design, IDT supports its customers with a design-in guide and powerful support tools to further ease the development process. The IDTP9025 is currently sampling to qualified customers and is available in a 3 mm by 2.5 mm WLCSP package. The IDTP9025 part number is priced at $2.44 each for volumes of 1,000 units. Advanced Thermal Batteries, Inc. Receives Contract From Lockheed Martin Company Advanced Thermal Batteries, Inc. (ATB, Inc.), the US division of ASB Group, has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract from Lockheed Martin Company for the qualification of 4 Battery Power * Winter 2014 EnerSys has entered into an agreement to acquire Quallion LLC, a manufacturer of lithium ion cells and batteries for high integrity applications for $30 million. Headquartered in Sylmar, Calif., Quallion's products include lithium ion cells and batteries for diverse applications including medical devices, defense, aviation and space. The closing of the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions. "This acquisition provides EnerSys with an entry into the rapidly growing medical device battery markets for both implantable and external devices," said John D. Craig, chairman, president and CEO of EnerSys. "With the US government's Title III investment of $65 million in Quallion's cathode and anode production equipment, we will have the capability to produce lithium ion materials and for satellite batteries. In addition to being the only domestic battery manufacturer to control the complete production process, by combining Quallion with our ABSL space business, EnerSys becomes the largest domestic provider of battery technology to the space industry. We anticipate that this transaction will be accretive to our earnings by 3 to 5 cents per diluted share during the first full year following acquisition." EnerSys, a global provider in stored energy solutions for industrial applications, manufactures and distributes reserve power and motive power batteries, chargers, power equipment, and battery accessories to customers worldwide. Motive power batteries are utilized in electric fork trucks and other commercial electric powered vehicles. Reserve power batteries are used in the telecommunications and utility industries, uninterruptible power supplies, and numerous applications requiring standby power. Quallion designs, fabricates and manufactures lithium ion cells and battery packs, and develops new battery chemistries for the military, aerospace, medical and automotive industries. Building on its legacy in the medical device industry, the company has developed a range of novel enabling technologies that includes the world's smallest implantable secondary battery and the proprietary Zero-Volt and SaFE-LYTE technologies. Quallion LLC was founded in 1998. www.BatteryPowerOnline.com http://www.BatteryPowerOnline.com
