Industry News North American Business Conditions Stabilize, Improvement Seen During Next Six Months NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) indicated that conditions facing the North American electro-industry stabilized in September, after signaling deterioration in each of the three previous months. Just as many survey panelists (20 percent) reported conditions improved from August to September as reported conditions worsened. The rest of the panel (60 percent) reported conditions were unchanged. A month ago nearly 21 percent reported an improvement against about 38 percent reporting a decline. Thus, the EBCI for current North American conditions climbed nearly 9 pointst from August to reach 50 points in September. September’s EBCI for future North American conditions rebounded from the decline posted a month earlier and continues to point toward better conditions over the next six months. The index increased 3.2 points to 58.3 in the latest month. Nearly 37 percent of panelists said they expected conditions to improve by March 2012 versus 20 percent anticipating they will worsen. In August, 31 percent of panelists said they expected an improvement, while nearly 21 percent reported anticipating a decline. were used to house the security equipment and outfitted with an EIC ThermoTEC 140B series 400 BTU (AC) thermoelectric air conditioner with a supplemental heating option. The ThermoTEC air conditioners were through-mounted vertically on the enclosures. The through-mounting provided ample room to house the cooling equipment so that the camera equipment did not need to be altered. Global DC Power Systems Market Bounces Back Following the Growth of End-User Industries Daat Launches New Partnership in China Daat Research Corp. has formed a partnership with Shanghaibased BPSolution Technology Co. Ltd. to deliver CFD software and solutions to the Chinese market. BPSolution is a consulting firm in the automotive, aerospace, biomedical and electronics industries. Among the company’s customers is Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, who produces many wellknown products, such as Apple’s iPhone and iPad. BPSolution will provide sales, support and consulting services for all Daat products: Coolit, CoolitPC and the recently introduced CoolitDC. Powering each Coolit offering is the advanced computational engine, developed by Daat Research Corp. and used in thousands of design projects. EIC Helps Safeguard US Borders Through Cooling and Heating of Monitoring Systems EIC Solutions, Inc. has completed the delivery of 110 Protector series air conditioned stainless steel enclosures for a Department of Homeland Security project. The EIC Protector series was chosen as a solution for cooling and heating RFID systems used for frequent crosser recognition at US border crossings. “We knew right away we needed to provide a solution that required virtually no maintenance and could also be supplemented with a heating unit, because the temperatures in these locations varies from very warm to extremely cold,” said Josh Liegel, an EIC sales engineer. “Keeping the camera system’s electronics from overheating was imperative because they protect US borders from illegal entry and exit.” The security systems include cameras that are used to document cars entering and leaving the US by recording the license plate numbers of the vehicles as well as RFID tag readers for frequent crossers. The EIC Protector series air conditioned enclosures proved to be a good fit for the application. The Protector series enclosures are designed to safely house and cool electronic equipment in a wide range of applications. These stainless steel enclosures carry a NEMA 4X rating and are suitable for wall-mounting, pole-mounting or floor-mounting and are available with a variety of options. To meet the requirements, custom pole-mount stainless steel enclosures were modified for the application. The enclosures 28 On the back of the success of the telecom market, the world market for DC power systems has wrested back the market demand lost during 2009. The soaring popularity of 3G, long-term evolution (LTE) and 4G networks has given the market a much needed tail wind and allowed it to shake off the effects of the downturn. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan’s World DC Power Systems Market finds that the market earned revenue of $2.99 billion in 2010 and estimates this to reach $4.27 billion in 2017, at a compound annual growth rate of 5.2 percent. The increasing penetration of novel telecom technologies in developing regions such as the Asia Pacific and Latin American areas, as well as infrastructure upgrades to support faster speeds, have necessitated substantial investments in telecom equipment and consequently, DC power systems. Infrastructure upgrades and wider technology adoption aside, the market will also get a huge boost from the introduction of more efficient systems. “With green trends gaining currency, major manufacturers are focusing on expanding their green footprint by rolling out new products with high conversion efficiencies,” said Frost & Sullivan senior industry analyst Anu Elizabeth Cherian. “These energy-efficient DC systems are a huge lure for end-users that are looking to replace their existing systems.” In addition to this, high-performance DC backup power systems catalyze the transformation of network infrastructure. The flip side of this dependence on the telecom sector is that any imbalance in the end-user market will have a ripple effect on the DC power systems market. To preempt this situation and insulate themselves from possible ramifications, manufacturers are expanding into traditional uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems markets. Manufacturers will also have to strategize on dealing with intense market competition, lack of product differentiation and inadequate innovation in legacy product designs. As the basic product designs have not changed significantly, manufacturers will be heavily reliant on traditional raw materials. The high volatility of raw material prices in this mature market will challenge manufacturers to keep their prices competitive. NASA Uses MicroStrain Sensors to Monitor Vibroacoustic Shock During Shuttle Launches MicroStrain, Inc. provided NASA Kennedy Space Center with the wireless sensor technology to remotely monitor lift off acoustics and vibration generated during the launch of both Endeavour and Atlantis space shuttles. The noise generated by rocket exhaust affects the safety of spacecraft, ground facilities and hazardous equipment. Data gathered by MicroStrain’s sensors was used in corroborating prediction models. The deployed sensor network provides NASA with the means to implement scalable, wireless sensors capable of proactively monitoring highvalue, hazardous systems. NASA considered several systems and determined that MicroStrain’s sensor solutions met their requirements for this par- November/December 2011 www.ElectronicsProtectionMagazine.com http://www.ElectronicsProtectionMagazine.com
