NASA Develops Hall-Effect Electric Propulsion to Thrust Explora on into Deep
Space
Hall Effect Thruster Technologies
Developed at NASA
NASA researchers are at work developing many initiatives to
advance space exploration, some of them dealing with Hall effect
technologies for electric propulsion.
In the example shown in the accompanying image, NASA Glenn
engineer Dr. Peter Peterson prepares a high-power Hall thruster
for ground testing in a vacuum chamber that simulates the
environment in space. Referred to as the Hall Effect Rocket with
Magnetic Shielding (HERMeS), this device operates at 12.5 kW,
which has three times greater power than existing systems. This
high-power solar electric propulsion capability has been identified as a critical part of NASA's future deep space exploration
plans.
Innovators at NASA's Glenn Research Center have also developed new technologies that increase the operational lifetime of
a Hall effect thruster (HET), which is used primarily on earthorbiting satellites and can also be used for deep-space robotic
vehicles.
The operational lifetime of HETs is determined by the amount of
time the thruster can operate before the plasma within the channel damages the magnetic system. Prior to this innovation, the
plasma would erode the ceramic chamber of the HET in just over
a year of operation.
