New Workshops Telecommunications for the Smart Grid SCADA/Remote Monitoring and Control 101 December 11th, 2013 – Las Vegas, Nev., Green Valley Ranch Resort Course Hours: 8am – 4pm Instructor: Chuck Keller – Applied Professional Training Price: $385 Register at www.RemoteExpo.com December 12th, 2013 – Las Vegas, Nev., Green Valley Ranch Resort Course Hours: 8am – 12pm Instructor: Chuck Keller – Applied Professional Training Price: $195 Register at www.RemoteExpo.com Course Description Smart Grid Technology is advancing rapidly within the Electric Utility, Commercial Building, and Home Automation industries. This course provides students with a working knowledge of modern Smart Grid telecommunication methods and technologies currently being deployed by today’s electric utility companies. Technologies include a variety of data transport services and network architectures, including conventional two-way private radio systems, SCADA, protective relaying and the need for high voltage protection circuit reliability. The course emphasizes the importance of physical and electronic security in maintaining 24/7 grid operations plus ensuring that regulatory compliance requirements are met. Complete overview coverage of technologies used to monitor and control wide area transmission and distribution power grids include fiber optics (SONET-DWDM, RPR), wireline, (DSL, WAN, MPLS, LAN-Ethernet) wireless, (Mesh, WiMAX, LTE, HSPA, GPRS, Zigbee, WiFi, Satellite VSATs, cellular, terrestrial microwave), Broadband Power Line, and Power Line Carrier systems unique to the Smart Grid. This course brings together all the elements of modern telecommunications, electrical energy management and control systems into one quality course that enhances industry change. Course Description SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are at the heart of modern industrial enterprises including mining plants, water and electrical utility installations, oil and gas plants to name a few. This course will explain the basics of how electrical power systems are monitored and controlled from a system energy management center using SCADA equipment and standard communications protocols. The course will focus on the fundamentals of SCADA systems hardware, software and the numerous communications mediums now available consisting of wireline, wireless and fiber optic technologies. As more utilities move to upgrade SCADA equipment to Ethernet based protocols, Local Area Networks (LANs) have become a common method of electrical remote control via utility master centers. The basics of LAN architecture and physical connectivity will be presented as it relates to TCP/IP and security methods. The move to implement Smart Grid technologies, the evolution from centralized control to distributed control has added a new level of concern for security of assets. The basic IT security methods commonly used today will be discussed covering the use of firewalls, VPNs and Demilitarized Zones (DMZs) plus other common methods of physical security. http://www.RemoteExpo.com http://www.RemoteExpo.com http://www.RemoteExpo.com http://www.RemoteExpo.com
