ALLIANCE UPDATE
Empowered to Control Your World
By Tobin J.M. Richardson, Chairman & CEO • ZigBee Alliance
Entering its second decade, the ZigBee Alliance is well-positioned to continue leading
the industry to its next phase of growth. Our
mantra of Control Your World came to life in
our first decade, with ZigBee firmly established as the only standard based on low power, low cost technology for monitoring and control of the widest range of devices impacting our daily lives. Today, with hundreds of devices certified,
and many more being added every day, the market is proving the
worth of this technology, and bringing that value to consumers.
This technology was conceived from the ground up to deliver
wireless sensor and control networks. ZigBee stands alone in
combining technology attributes such as reliability, scalability,
security and co-existence together with the strength of a robust
ecosystem made up of multiple vendors offering silicon, software, services and end products, which is the hallmark of a true
technology standard.
ZigBee – Advancing the Smart Grid
In the coming years, hundreds of millions of devices will be
connected spanning home automation, building automation,
smart metering, home area networks (HANs), lighting, security,
consumer electronics, retail, industrial, healthcare and other verticals. The capability to seamlessly connect such a broad spectrum of devices and enable sharing of information to greatly enhance their individual capabilities and value is at the core of the
vision of the ZigBee Alliance, enabling control for end users and
commercial systems alike.
Towards that end, the ZigBee Alliance took significant steps
forward with the completion of the ZigBee IP specification and
Smart Energy Profile 2 (SEP 2) standard. ZigBee IP is the first
open standard for an IPv6-based fully wireless mesh networking
solution providing seamless internet connections to control a variety of devices. The SEP 2 standard provides IP-based information and control for energy management in HANs for both wired
and wireless networks which will not only ensure a more stable,
reliable and efficient energy supply in the 21st century smart grid
but empower consumers to take control of their energy consumption like never before. This also will support new capabilities such
as control of plug in hybrid electric vehicle charging, support for
multiple energy interfaces into a single premises and deployment
of HANs in multi dwelling units such as apartment buildings.
The completion of ZigBee IP and SEP 2 paves the way for a
wave of ZigBee certified products based on these standards later
in the year and into 2014, with growing demand in the US market, Japan, China, South East Asia, Australia and other regions.
ZigBee - Enabling the Connected Home
We are also seeing a major transformation in home networks
as the number of communicating devices in the home increase
dramatically and low power technologies like ZigBee connect
them in ways that provide unprecedented control and deliver unmatched comfort, convenience, safety and energy management

capabilities to consumers. Over the years, ZigBee has already
been deployed in many homes for controlling media, climate and
lighting. Now, we are experiencing large scale deployments of
security systems and energy management systems using ZigBee
technology by some of the largest broadband service providers
and telcos in the world. ZigBee is the preferred standard because
it continues to be the one standard capable of robust, reliable and
securely networking ever increasing number of connected devices like electrical switches, lights, thermostats, door locks, set top
boxes and appliances onto a single network. The ZigBee Home
Automation Standard was recently updated to incorporate new
extensions for including even more devices and easing commissioning as well as other updating capability.
ZigBee – A Complete Portfolio
The Internet of Things will pervade our lives, in homes, businesses and our environment. The technical requirements and
unique attributes of the different devices for sensing and communicating in the environments they exist will vary but they will also
be a part of the larger world of connected devices. The ZigBee
Alliance has developed three specifications and 10 application
standards that deliver advanced sensing and control capabilities
with required product interoperability over secure and scalable
mesh networks.
The ZigBee PRO, ZigBee IP and ZigBee RF4CE serve as the
base networking systems to facilitate interoperable, global market
standards. ZigBee Building Automation, ZigBee Remote Control,
ZigBee Smart Energy, ZigBee Health Care, ZigBee Home Automation, ZigBee Input Devices, ZigBee Light Link, ZigBee Retail
Services, ZigBee Telecom Services and Smart Energy Profile 2
are standards created by world leading industry experts to meet the
specific needs of businesses and users. Also, enhanced capabilities
such as the new, eco-friendly Green Power Feature for ZigBee
PRO, a new choice for wirelessly networking energy harvesting
devices, further allow consumers and businesses to network devices even in locations where power is unavailable or disallowed.
ZigBee – Leading the Path
ZigBee continues to grow and influence the industry in the
direction of a shared vision. ZigBee now boasts more than 400
members globally, over 700 certified products, innovative and
proven networking specifications and application standards and a
dynamic, competitive group of vendors in every part of the ecosystem. The ZigBee Alliance has forged relationships with many
other industry associations, groups and initiatives around the
world to support our members’ goals and deliver consumer value.
ZigBee is extending this approach in rapidly expanding markets
such as Asia and Latin America. As we enter the next phase, the
Alliance is committed to lead the path in realizing the vision our
members articulated in its genesis more than a decade ago – it is
going to be an exciting time, and I hope this guide shows you just
some of the great reasons using Zigbee technology can help bring
your consumers greater value.
