This may be the most diverse tasting section we’ve ever published, with choices
from as far afield as Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. The US choices are no less intriguing, including
California chenin blanc (Clarksburg Wine Co.) and trousseau gris (Zeitgeist),
Oregon albariño (Abacela) and grüner veltliner (Raptor Ridge), Snake River syrah
(Sawtooth in Idaho) and Columbia Valley malbec (Three Rivers).
Those wide-ranging selections are chock-full of great values. Just try to find a
wine as complex and dynamic as Anselmo Mendes’s Alvarinho from Vinho Verde
for $20 (p. 74). Or a bubbly as fine and delicate as the Blink Zibibbo from Greece
for $18 (p. 64). Our first-ever Czech wine tasting suggests this is a country to
follow, and the sophistication of the Slovenian wines uncovered some of the
most cellarable values on the market today.
As always, we chose these wines exclusively through our blind tastings, held
in our offices with panels of leading sommeliers and retail buyers. For this issue,
Rebecca Fineman of Ame, Bianca Jimenez-Rivera of SPQR and Rob Renteria of La
Folie were among those who joined us in San Francisco; in New York, our panelists included Scott Carney, the dean of wine studies at the International Culinary
Center, Christy Frank of Frankly Wines and James Mallios of Amalí.
