NEWS IN BRIEF October 2016 Poderi Luigi Einaudi acquired 22 acres of land in the Bussia cru of Barolo from the Dardo family. The parcel includes 10 acres of nebbiolo, two and a half acres of barbera with the rest unplanted or forested. Rachel DelRocco won TEXSOM's 2016 Best New Sommelier competition this past August. DelRocco, who is a sommelier at Camerata at Paulie's in Houston, competed against 24 other southerners, with fellow Texans David Donaldson of Classified Wines in Euless and Lindsay Drew of Lonesome Dove in Austin finishing as runners-up. Nominees for the first Taste Talk Food & Drink Awards include New York City's Amor y Amargo, Clover Club and Maison Premiere; Portland's Clyde Common; and Miami's The Broken Shaker in the Bar Program field. In its first investment outside of Spain, Jerez-based González Byass purchased a controlling stake in the Chilean winery Veramonte. Veramonte owns nearly 1,500 acres of vineyards across Chile. Kyle J. Krause (right), president and CEO of the Iowa-based Kum & Go convenience store chain, purchased the Vietti winery in Castiglione Falletto, along with its 84 acres of vines in the Barolo zone. He was the proprietor and winemaker of his family's winery in Novello's Ravera cru, in Italy's Piedmont region. Denis Dubourdieu, professor of oenology at the University of Bordeaux and the winemaker who transformed the style of the region's white wines in the 1980s and '90s, passed away on July 26 at the age of 67. His four properties in Bordeaux include Château Reynon, Clos Floridene and Château Haura and Château Cantegril; he also managed his father's Château Doisy-Daëne. Williams Selyem purchased the Saitone Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The 33-acre property includes 12 acres of zinfandel planted in 1895. Kosta Brown purchased Cerise Vineyards from Peter and Heidi Knez. The property includes three vineyards- Cerise, Demuth and Knez-planted on slopes high up in the eastern hills of California's Anderson Valley. Hyde de Villaine purchased the 33.5acre site in southern Napa Valley that hosts its winery, including the surrounding 24 acres of vineyards. The winery, a partnership between Napa grower Larry Hyde and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's Aubert de Villaine, will continue to focus on producing wines from the Hyde Vineyard on the Napa side of Carneros. Jean Arnold Sessions, former president of Hanzell Vineyards, was named executive director of Sonoma County Vintners after serving in an interim capacity for four months. Paul Hobbs acquired the 42-acre Goldrock Ridge Vineyard in western Sonoma, near Annapolis. O'Neill Vintners & Distillers, whose brands include Redtree, Camelot and Flat Rock, purchased the Paso Roblesbased Robert Hall Winery. Margie Healy, vice president at Sonomabased Korbel, was elected chairman of the Wine Institute's board. The public policy advocacy organization now represents nearly 1,000 California wineries. In July, the TTB approved a fifth American Viticultural Area for Michigan: The Tip of the Mitt encompasses about 41 vineyards in the northern reaches of the state's mittenshaped lower peninsula, framed by Lake Michigan to the west, the Straits of Mackinac to the north and Lake Huron to the east. Egon Müller, owner of Egon MüllerScharzhof in Germany's Mosel region, has been named president of Primum Familiae Vini (PFV), an association of 11 European wineries that have been family-owned for at least a century.
