and país. It feels bright, filled with red fruit
and spices floating over a layer of dense tannins. A luminous wine for roast turkey. § Vine

2013 Maipo Valley Vitrum (Best Buy) ^ More
intense and extracted than many of the wines
from coastal Maipo, this is a powerful blend
based on cabernet sauvignon and syrah,
along with malbec, carménère and petit verdot. It's filled with red and black fruit and
young, impetuous tannins that need three
to four years in the cellar to mellow. If you
like extreme sports, you may want to try this
wine now with curry lamb. § Chocalan USA,
Manhasset, NY

2012 Central Valley Aliara ^ This wine's
oak feels dominant at first, but then the
charming fruit of malbec (42 percent of the
blend) takes the lead. Cabernet adds strong,
masculine tannins as the fruit continues to
gain prominence, with pure depths of red
cherry and blackberry flavors. Winemaker
Arnaud Hereu considers this the best possible
blend Odfjell can produce from the family's
estate vineyards. § Epic Wines, Capitola, CA

2016 Maule Valley Aupa Pipeño (Best Buy) ^
David Marcel, from France's Basque country,
was working in Maule as a bulk wine broker
while building his own project, Maitía, back
in 2012. That's when he fell in love with the
refreshing pipeños, the traditional wines
of Chile's south, usually made from país.
He buys grapes for Aupa from dry-farmed
vines in Loncomilla, the país (70 percent)
more than 100 years old, the carignan over
70 years. The result is a lovely, refreshing
and red-fruited pipeño, with vivid, shining
acidity. It's the kind of wine you won't stop
drinking. § Brazos, Brooklyn, NY

$30

2013 Maule Valley Vigno Old Vines DryFarmed ^ Vigno's members, dedicated to oldvine, dry-farmed carignan in Maule, range
from tiny artisanal producers to larger
wineries like Morandé. Ricardo Baettig
makes this blend from 60-year-old vines in
Melozal. It's mostly carignan (76 percent),
with syrah and a little chardonnay fermented
in oak, which he believes adds the floral scent.
Notes of cherries and flowers illuminate the
palate, while firm acidity and tannins keep
the structure tight. It's ready to take on a
meaty asado, the Chilean barbecue. § V2 Wine
Group, Sonoma, CA

$25

2015 La Soledad T.H. [Terroir Hunter]
Rarities País-Cinsault ^ Rafael Urrejola fills
out this rustic, earthy país with a little fruity
cinsault (15 percent), all from old vines at
La Soledad vineyard in Cauquenes. This is a
lovely, charming red, delicious and easy, perfect to sip around the swimming pool. It's
rich in red fruits, spices and earthy notes-
you will need another glass. § Maritime Wine
Trading Collective, San Francisco, CA

2014 Limarí Valley Vetas Blancas Reserva
Especial Espinal Cabernet Franc (Best
Buy) ^ Herb scents make a little party in
this cabernet franc from the chalky soils of
Limarí. The fruit emerges from behind the
herbs with some time in the glass, filling out
firm tannins, underlined by acidity. Herbs
come back again on the finish, leaving a
pleasant and refreshing feel. For a salad of
duck confit. § Biagio Cru and Estate Wines, New

2014 Itata Valley Grand Itata ^ Cinsault
adds its velvety texture to país, with its
more herbal, earthy side coming together
in this beautiful, simple and rustic blend. As
refreshing as it is, this is a great red to pour
by the glass or simply with meat empanadas,
as country folk in Chile would do. § Brazos,

2011 Maule Valley Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon ^ Rafael Tirado planted vines above the
shore of Colbún lake, high up in the Andes
mountains. He blends this from merlot (61
percent), cabernet sauvignon (35 percent)
and cabernet franc, offering a spicy, blackfruited wine with tight tannins and firm
mountain-fresh acidity. Decant it for rack of
lamb. § Brazos, Brooklyn, NY

2013 Maule Valley Vigno Old Vines DryFarmed Carignan ^ Alcance is a member of
Vigno (Vignadores del Carignan), a group
of growers working together to rescue and
promote the heritage of old, dry-farmed carignan vines in Maule. This wine comes from
