Josh Jensen Sells

On August 15, 2017, Duckhorn Wine
Company announced the acquisition
of Calera Wine Company. Jensen
founded Calera in 1975 and has
made his vineyards on Mount Harlan

pinot noir: The winery has earned six Top 100 awards from W&S.
Jensen will remain with the company and will take a seat on the
Board of Directors at Duckhorn Wine Company; winemaker Mike

has acquired Quinta Vale D. Maria, a vineyard and
winery along the Torto River in the Douro's Cima
Corgo. Cristiano van Zeller, who had run his family's
Francisca and
Quinta do Noval before its sale to AXA Millésimes,
Cristiano
had acquired Vale D. Maria in 1996. As part of the
van Zeller
deal, van Zeller, a cousin of the Guedes family, will
become a shareholder in Aveleda; he, along with his
daughter, Francisca, and their winemaking team, will continue to run Vale D. Maria, while
developing a new project at Seis Quintas, a 103-acre vineyard in the Douro Superior that

Podcasts for Italian Wine Lovers

With the San Francisco Chronicle's recently launched The Press,
you can chart out an entire road trip through wine country,
complete with times, effective routes and winery visits. The
interactive site includes maps, suggested routes, wine tasting
and event listings, restaurant and winery reviews and feature
stories provided by food critic Michael Bauer, wine critic Ester
Mobley and a team of writers from the Bay Area newspaper.

Earlier this year, English wine writer Monty Waldin
launched Italian Wine Podcast, a series of interviews
with wine producers, sommeliers and other experts in
Italian wine. Recent episodes feature Laura Bianchi of
Castello di Monsanto in Tuscany, Swedish sommelier
Anna Ronngren and vintner Elena Fucci from
Basilicata. He has also recorded a set of interviews
on Italian grape varieties with Ian d'Agata, author of
Native Wine Grapes of Italy. Waldin's style is lively and
conversational, and at just 10 to 12 minutes for most
episodes, it's a great way to catch up on Italian wine
while on the go. Episodes can be downloaded free

Coravin for Screw Caps
Coravin, the company that patented a
system for drawing wine out of unopened
bottles of cork-sealed wines, has created
a system to preserve the wine in screwcapped bottles as well. Coravin's selfsealing silicone cap replaces the original
metal one, protecting the wine from oxygen
while also allowing the use of a Coravin
needle, just as you would on a bottle with
a natural cork. Coravin claims that the cap
withstands 50 punctures and protects the wine up to three
months; six-packs of the caps will cost $30 and be available

Smith's New Gig

Steve Smith, MW

Steve Smith, MW, the cofounder of Craggy Range in New
Zealand, and Brian Sheth, a Texas-based investor, have
partnered to buy Pyramid Valley Vineyards in Waikari (North
Canterbury), Lowburn Ferry Wines (Central Otago) and land in
Gimblett Gravels (Hawkes Bay). Michael Henley, who worked
with Smith for a decade at Craggy Range, will serve as CEO for

Chef Julia Sullivan, formerly of Per Se and Franny's in NYC, returned to her hometown, along
with business partner Allie Poindexter, to open Henrietta Red, a light and airy dining room
and oyster bar offering inspired Carolina coastal cuisine and a seafood-friendly wine list.
Poindexter runs the wine program, focusing on smaller and biodynamic producers-there's
a half-dozen sparklers by the glass and a lengthy list of whites by the glass and bottle, as
well as a few zippy reds, like the Domaine Sauvète Les Gravouilles from France's Touraine,
and an Austrian zweigelt from Heinrich in Burgenland. Sullivan masters the use of her
wood-fired oven, roasting oysters, baking sourdough breads for the base of her mussel
toast, and firing house-made pork sausage to place over purple lady peas. The list of wellportioned plates ranges from oyster fritters to a silky chicken-liver mousse with a crown of
