$25

2015 Columbia Valley Semillon-Sauvignon-Muscadelle ^ This is bright and lemony,
with a hint of herbs, like rosemary oil. There's
a rich, almost resinous texture to the goldenapple and peach flavors, suggesting this has
the stuffing to age, while the muscadelle gives
it just enough lift to serve now with poached
halibut. (820 cases)
507655

90 | Chateau Ste. Michelle

$9

2016 Columbia Valley Dry Riesling (Best
Buy) ^ A terrific wine for the price, this riesling's best feature is its freshness; it's a hightoned, leesy white leading with scents of
apple blossoms and a hint of lime. The flavors are at once crisp and round, supple and
generous, with the body to pair with seafood,
like octopus or squid.

$11

2016 Columbia Valley Rosé (Best Buy) ^
Perky and bright, with juicy strawberry flavors, this simple, fresh wine has lively acidity
and fruit-skin grip. Chill it for a warm day.

$95

2014 Red Mountain Collector's Society
Red Wine ^ When Col Solare started to bottle different components and blends of their
estate fruit, from vines now 12 years old,
it was an exploration, to see just what this
property could do. Clearly, it can do spectacular things, as this blend of cabernet and
malbec shows. At once elegant and powerful,
the wine has an aromatic tension between
leafy, cedary notes and the dark, inky depths
of fruit that Red Mountain can provide. The
flavors are deeply influenced by the malbec,
which contributes purple florals and a blueberry-skin grip of tannins. There's some welcome acidity in the finish that gives the wine
a cool savor despite its unmistakable Red
Mountain power. Cellar this to serve with
rosemary-rubbed lamb shoulder. (50 cases)

92 | aMaurice Cellars

$60

2014 Walla Walla Valley Night Owl ^ Merlot and cabernet sauvignon dominate this
savory red. It leads with scents of cedar, black
plum and, with air, a touch of black cherry
that feels like a bright light in an otherwise
black pool. The warm-vintage tannic struc100

ture is massive, but the savory notes of cinnamon and bay laurel make it an intriguing
wine for lamb. (760 cases)

92 | aMaurice Cellars

$40

2014 Columbia Valley Mason (Best Buy) ^
This blend is about two-thirds cabernet sauvignon, with the balance franc. Like the
Night Owl (recommended here as well), it's
powerful, dense and monolithic, with a plum
scent almost hidden in the darkness. The flavors are surprisingly supple and pure, with an
unexpected juiciness and light tannins. In all,
a surprise red for steak. (550 cases)
507773

92 | Pepper Bridge

$65

2014 Walla Walla Valley Trine ^ Cabernet
franc and cabernet sauvignon each make up
a third of this blend, with the balance merlot,
malbec and petit verdot. It not only shows
the warmth of the vintage, but the mass of
tannins a warm vintage will bestow upon
Bordeaux varieties in Walla Walla. This wine,
drawn from Seven Hills, Octave and Pepper
Bridge vineyards, among others, has remarkable concentration, driven by dark plummy
fruit and dense tannins. Unleash its unremitting intensity on a dry-aged steak. (900 cases)
507796

92 | Spring Valley Vineyard $50

2014 Walla Walla Valley Frederick ^ Spring
Valley's cabernet sauvignon-heavy estate
blend has a cedary, cinnamon-stick coating
of spice, with velvety, dark plum fruit. The
texture feels oak derived, but pleasingly lean
and elegant as a result, buoyed by enough
acidity to keep the wine lively and linear.
(2,966 cases)
508128

91 | L'Ecole No 41

$65

2014 Walla Walla Valley Ferguson Vineyard ^ A young wine from a warm vintage,
this blend focuses on cabernet sauvignon
(56 percent) and merlot from L'Ecole's dramatic planting above Seven Hills, a parcel
of the Sevein project. It's dark and brooding, overlaid with scents of cedar and clove.
With air the wine's frame comes into view,
firm and tannic, as if the grape skins had
been whipped by the wind. The structure is
moored to dark, basaltic, mineral tannins.
Impressive, and nowhere near ready to drink.

89 | Hedges

$30

2013 Red Mountain RMAVA Grand Class
(Best Buy) ^ Spicy, brooding and long, this
blend is focused on cabernet sauvignon
and merlot. It's wearing its intensity on its
sleeve right now, with a panoply of anise and
other dark spices, and a core of fruit so dark

it seems to have a gravitational pull. Cellar
before decanting for a steak.

$85

2014 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ^
This wine blends estate fruit with grapes
from Col Solare's neighbors, including Klipsun and Shaw/Quintessence. It's a brute
when first poured, so obtuse it's hard to know
where it will go. But patience is rewarded as
this wine unfurls to something vinous, powerful and complete, a cedar scent that brings
to mind Bordeaux, a dark pool of plum flavor and tannins that are powerful and firm
but not oppressively so. It needs time, but
already has the stuffing for steak.
450385
2014 Red Mountain Grand Passage Cabernet Sauvignon ^ This is the reserve selection
from estate vineyards at Duckhorn's foray
into Washington. It captures Red Mountain's
inherent intensity of fruit with aplomb, its
juicy flavors accented by aromas of cedar,
mocha and mint. The flavors are packed and
concentrated, but there's enough acidity to
assure a balanced cellar life-or serve with
something deeply savory, like shaking beef.
(232 cases)
450314
2014 Walla Walla Valley Owl and Crown
Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ^ This
100 percent cabernet sauvignon comes from
the family estate in the Mill Creek section
of Walla Walla. It's a savory red, focused on
cedar, soy, sun-dried tomato skin and a touch
of fig. There's intriguingly bright fruit-
spiced strawberry along the lines of moustarda-with an unexpected lift to the flavors
that feels classic and fresh. (250 cases)
507909
2014 Red Mountain Component Collection Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ^
Here's a chance to taste the cabernet component from Col Solare's estate fruit-and it
doesn't disappoint. All Red Mountain energy
when first poured, this wine's black-fig-andcarob scents provide a black curtain over
the wine, pushed into further blackness by
a licorice accent. The fruit, dark as it is, has
a freshness that suggests the wine will cellar
well, which is where it should go for at least
a year. (104 cases)
