2013 Priorat Partida Bellvisos Garnatxa
Blanca ^ Sara Pérez and René Barbier select
the grapes for this wine from the oldest vines
of garnacha blanca and macabeo in Bellvisos,
a vineyard in Gratallops. It's so firm in structure and monolithic in size it feels closer to a
red wine than a white, and may well have the
same capacity to age in bottle. Spicy in flavor,
strong in acidity, and with a delicate layer of
mineral flavors that gradually expands, this
white still needs at least five years to reach
its peak. Even then, you may want to pour
it with a steak. § Michael Skurnik Wines, NY

2014 Priorat Torroja Pedra de Guix ^
Dominik Huber, the German-born owner
and winemaker at Terroir Al Limit, crafted
this wine from very old cariñena vines
planted at 2,130 feet, one of the highest
vineyards in Priorat. Melding salty notes
with dried-fruit flavors and hints of flowers
and stones, it's a complex white, with the
energy of a very young wine made to last
for a decade in bottle. § Europa Wine Imports,

2016 Priorat Porrera Planetes de Nin
Blanc ^ This is made from young-vine carignan blanc, a rare and natural mutation of
red carignan. It spends six months in amphorae, then three months in neutral French oak
barrels. It's rich in notes of white peaches and
almonds, accented by spice, the wine's acidity playing a fundamental role, maintaining
the rhythm of freshness and tension. § Eric

2015 Montsant Dido (Best Buy) ^ This is a
cofermentation of garnacha and syrah, with
a little cabernet and merlot, from a vineyard
on the granitic soils of Falset. It's a lovely
expression of Montsant, exuberant in its
expression of fresh fruits and fragrant roses,
together with some mineral tones. This is the
kind of red you need for barbequed beef ribs. §

91 | Buil & Giné

$31

2012 Montsant Venus ^ This has the concentration and depth of flavor of old-vine
cariñena (45 percent of the blend) and garnacha (20 percent), along with some youngvine syrah, all planted in clay and limestone
soils. It feels generous and wide, the ripe fruit
unrolling in the mouth with soft tannins, a
menthol side emerging with air. Pour it now
with roast pork. § Michael Skurnik Wines, NY

2014 Montsant Baboix ^ Baboix is a vineyard
with old-vine garnacha and cariñena interspersed with about 30 percent young-vine
tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon and merlot,
all grown at Mas d'en Cosme, an old farm on
the outskirts of Falset. The 2014 is brilliant in
its tension, filled with lovely red fruit, spice
and herbs, held together by a fine network
of tannins. § Think Global, Santa Barbara, CA

91 | Orto Vins

$46

2014 Montsant Les Comes d'Orto ^ This is
one of those wines that you'd like to have,
well chilled, next to the pool and-especially-next to a grill full of sausages. It is
simple and deliciously refreshing, but at the
same time, it has enough grip and structure
for anything meaty coming off of that grill. §
Olé Imports, New Rochelle, NY

2015 Catalunya Sumoll ^ This smells delightful, with scents of red flowers and red fruits.
And it drinks dangerously easily, a lively acidity keeping the wine buoyant, as bright as
ripe raspberries. It's ready now to be served
chilled by the pool, a sophisticated summer
refresher. § Polaner Selections, Mount Kisco, NY

2015 Conca de Barberà Cup3 Trepat (Best

tannins to feel balanced. It needs bottle time
to gain complexity, but those generous fruit
flavors would complement Mongolian beef
right now. § Cordelina Wine Co., Gold River, CA

2014 Montsant Les Argiles d'Orto Vins

exotic spices and herbs, this blend of garnacha with 10 percent carignan is so light it feels
almost fragile. Chill it to serve with baked
cod. § Olé Imports, New Rochelle, NY

PRIORAT

97 | Terroir Al Limit

$290

2014 Priorat Torroja Les Manyes ^ Dominik
Hubert, owner and winemaker at Terroir Al
Limit, farms this wine in an unusual place by
Priorat standards: It comes from a vineyard
at 2,600 feet in altitude-one of the highest
in the region-on red clay soil rather than
the more celebrated slate. The result is a wine
as taut as a high-tension cable, with an acidity
so firm and strong that it seems to electrify
the wine. Made entirely of garnacha, held in
a single 1,200-liter foudre for two years before
bottling, it's rich in red fruit, spice and mineral notes, but above all it is rich in structure.
A wine to drink in a decade. § Eric Solomon

96 | Costers del Priorat

$75

95 | Alvaro Palacios

$65

2014 Priorat Clos Alzina Vinyes Velles
Samsó ^ Winemaker José Mas selects grapes
for this wine from Mas Alsera, a vineyard
planted to cariñena in 1939 at about 1,650
feet in altitude. The juice these plants give is
bright, full of light. The carignan here packs
a lot of red fruit, while its scent of gunpowder
hints at the slate in which it grows. Its freshness celebrates not only the cool altitude of
its terroir, but also the bright crispness of the
new style of Priorat wines. § De Maison Selections, Chapel Hill, NC
224304
2014 Priorat Gratallops ^ This is Alvaro Palacios's vi de vila, a local term that refers to a
wine that comes from vineyards surrounding
one village-in this case, Gratallops, right in
the center of Priorat. Eight vineyards contributed grapes to this bright red, a great
example of the new wave of Priorat wines,
much more focused on freshness and fruit
than on wood or superextraction. It feels
fresh and tense, vertical in structure, the flavors lasting long, with hints of slate and delicate spicy notes. Keep it for at least five years;
it will only gain in complexity and charm. §
