2012 Pyrenees L-Block Shiraz ^ From a dryfarmed parcel on shale and iron-rich soils,
L-Block offers a different structure than the
Malakoff bottling from this vineyard (also
recommended here). Kyungmoon Kim, MS,
of NYC's The Modern, described it as rustic
and Cornas-like, with an iron-like feel to its
tannins. While those tannins are dense at
first, their spiciness evolves with air, growing
more detailed, cool and layered with scents
of green peppercorns against the darker
tone of the fruit. This will benefit from sev-

tannins, the sweet richness of that fruit lasting on cool earthiness. Decant it for braised

2013 Pyrenees Lieu-Dit Malakoff Shiraz ^
Michel Chapoutier found this east-facing
site at the southern edge of the Pyrenees in
1998, and asked Tony Terlato, his importer in
Chicago, to partner with him to plant it. The
vines, growing on their own roots in schist,
shale and quartz soils, produced a brooding,
concentrated shiraz that blankets the palate
in savory black tannins. The wine is more
meaty than fruity, needing cellar time for the
generous texture to release its fruit flavors.

2013 Great Southern Redemption Shiraz ^ Primarily from two vineyards in Mount
Barker-one on a ridgetop of gravel and
another facing north, in gravel and granite-this includes some fruit from an eastfacing slope of the Porongurups. Fermented
without added yeast in open-top vats, the
Mount Barker lots included 20 percent whole
bunches, while the Porongurups lot was all
whole bunch. Those stems lend the wine
layers of spice, with scents of a rose garden,
basil, persimmon and pomegranate, feeling
crisp and coastal cool. Light in weight and
long in flavor, this is appealing now and well
