Wine & Spirits - October 2017 - 94

US NEW RELEASES
mineral cool. There's spicy red fruit at its
core, adding to the wine's youthful tension.
Decant it for something as rich as braised
oxtail, or let it develop further in the bottle.
508832

91 | Corison

$175

2014 St. Helena Napa Valley Sunbasket
Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ^ Basking
in full-on richness, this tastes like the juice
of ripe fresh cherries, a pretty cabernet with
some austere wood tannins, and plenty of
sweet fruit to fill them. That fruit darkens as
the wine evolves, bringing scents of candied
blueberries and blackberries. This needs time
for the tannins and fruit to meld, though the
texture is already gracious. (300 cases)
508116

90 | Banshee Wines

$50

2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ^
Banshee has contracts for this fruit in St.
Helena, Rutherford, Calistoga and Howell
Mountain. Heady with alcohol, this wine
takes its time to integrate. Give it several
hours in a decanter and you'll have a rich,
blackberry-scented Napa cabernet, a gracious heavyweight. (4,000 cases)
449548

90 | Heitz

$235

2012 Oakville Napa Valley Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ^ Grown at the
May family's vineyard in the western benchlands of Oakville, this cabernet is always a
late release from Heitz. In 2012, it has the
powerful richness of an Oakville cabernet,
with some mushroom notes that show its
maturity. Heady and warm, it's a wine for
braised lamb. (4,665 cases)

90 | Ridge

$60

90 | Ty Caton

$60

2014 Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Monte
Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ^ This
vintage of Ridge's "second wine" from the
Monte Bello estate is ripe and hearty, with
the spicy snap of cherry skin and a hint of
warmth from a sunny growing season. At
first enveloped by the toasted-coconut scent
of new American oak, it turns toward darker
tones of black olive and mesquite, the oak
and fruit tannins melting together and softening. Decant it for a New York strip.
507539
2014 Moon Mountain District Upper
Bench Caton Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ^ The volcanic slopes of Moon Mountain face west, into the bright afternoon sun
that warms Sonoma Valley below; as a result,
the cabernets from this newly formed appellation tend to be rich and dark. A blend of
the best cabernet lots from Ty Caton's estate,
which spans over 100 acres in those foothills,
this is concentrated and purple, with supple
tannins that don't need bottle age to soften,
and enough underlying freshness to keep the
wine sunny and upright. Decant it for prime
rib. (218 cases)
449987

88 | Dry Creek Vineyard

$26

88 | Obsidian Ridge

$26

86 | J. Lohr
90 | Nickel & Nickel

$115

2014 Oakville Napa Valley John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ^
From a vineyard on the east side of Highway
29, this grows at the edge of an alluvial fan
that spreads east from the benchlands at the
base of the Mayacamas Mountains. It produced a 2014 cabernet that's both lush and
herbal, fragrant with green, crunchy, savory
herbs even as it's rich and supple. Decant a
bottle for roast lamb.

OCTOBER 2017

CARIGNAN
508098

91 | Lioco

$52

2015 Mendocino County Sativa Carignan ^
This isn't your run-of-the-mill carignan vineyard: Jim McCutchen farms a patch of unirrigated, 70-year-old carignan vines planted at
over 2,000 feet of elevation on Pine Mountain, just north of the Sonoma County line.
Lioco winemaker John Raytek fermented the
fruit as whole bunches and aged the wine in
neutral oak. The result is juicy and satisfying,
its racy, dark berry fruit hinting at mint and
sage. It's an honest, vibrant California red for
Beaujolais lovers. (400 cases)

GRENACHE

2014 Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Buy) ^ Harvested from benchland and hillside vineyards throughout the
Dry Creek Valley, this leads with bold purple
fruit, a savory hint of black olive held in its
chewy tannins. It's a rich wine that you could
drink now with grilled lamb chops.
507706
2014 Red Hills Lake County Obsidian
Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Best
Buy) ^ Focused around loamy, chocolate-rich
tannins, this is potent black-fruited cabernet,
its Porty dried-fruit notes freshened by mineral spice.
507568

Vineyard. She purchased the property in
2014, and Corison has released its first Sunbasket Vineyard-designates. This cabernet
franc has a remarkably cool feel for a wine
from St. Helena, as if the wine's internal temperature came from the deep vine roots. The
color is light, transparent ruby, the flavor is
red edged in green, like barely ripe strawberry, pink peppercorns and pink grapefruit
acidity. It's a brisk red from Napa Valley,
spicy and bright, for country pate. (50 cases)

$17

2015 Paso Robles Seven Oaks Cabernet
Sauvignon (Best Buy) ^ Warm and rich, swirling with smoky wood notes, this balances its
heady oak with a savory black olive tone that
will match a T-bone steak.

CABERNET FRANC
508834

93 | Corison

$100

2014 St. Helena Napa Valley Helios Sunbasket Vineyard Cabernet Franc ^ Cathy
Corison has been purchasing fruit from this
vineyard for three decades, a site originally
planted by André Tchelistcheff for Beaulieu

450323

91 | Folded Hills

$34

2015 Santa Ynez Valley Grant Grenache ^
This is brisk, lifted grenache, its bright,
strawberry-red flavor turning floral at the
end, while the tannins are gripping, herbal
and refreshing. It's not a complex wine, but
it's all about fruit, with no oak or overripeness to mar its vibrant grenache character.
(527 cases)

MERLOT
449900

92 | Bravante

$65

2012 Howell Mountain Napa Valley Merlot ^ A lean merlot with gracious tannins and
richness in the texture, this has sunny strawberry fruit at its heart. Scents of cigar box add
dimension and complexity, placing the wine
with roast lamb. (300 cases)
