balanced in its raspberry flavors, sunny and
generous without overreaching, held in place

and cherry yield a savory, bark-like top note
in this warm-climate grenache. The flavors

2011 Willamette Valley Top Barrel Syrah ^
In a thrilling cool-climate experiment, the
team at Amalie Robert planted syrah and
viognier on a single acre in a cool vineyard west of Salem, drawing from the four
clones that Marcel Guigal recommended on
a visit to Oregon. This wine barely crosses
the threshold of 12 percent alcohol, and in
most respects would be thought of as backward. But the aromas-carob, smoke and
olive-are resolved and mature, the flavors
composed and quiet, dark red fruits marked
by charry, mature tannins. Decant it to serve

Estate Foothills in the Sun Vineyard Syrah ^
In his reserve syrah, Matt Reynvaan is aiming for a richer, darker, more masculine version of Foothills fruit, and perhaps that's
achieved: There's a ton of intensity and concentration here. But the aromatics are so
detailed and precise-spiced chocolate, tanbark, a hint of stem bitterness-that it feels
as if a breeze is blowing through the glass.
The tannins close the wine firmly, but that lift
and detail give the wine the balance it needs,
for something meaty, say, a New York strip.

2015 Walla Walla Valley Fred Syrah ^ While
2015 may have been a warm vintage, the
coolness of Mill Creek may give this estate
wine its contours. There's a hint of violets
and black plum in the aromas, and a dusty,
mineral note that prevails on the structure
of the tannins, along with an impression of
fruit extract that gives the wine some bounce
and suggests a long life. Even so, it's balanced
enough to drink now, with a steak. (W&S
